So, I went to meet the director...

So I went to meet the director, and wow, the lady's brilliant. And she's very encouraging. She told me to be upfront with the comittee about my GPA. Just put it in my open letter to the comittee of admissions, she said.  In that, discuss any "concerns:" Why transfer from a $35,000/year institution your junior year of college to someplace like Wright State? (HOW do I explain the whole fiasco with the plagarism investigation?!)  What about the, ahem, grades? They DO resemble a rather interesting rendition of the stock market--strong in some classes, not so much in others? ( WHERE do I start about my parents, the alcholism, the dysfunction? I mean, it's like I shared in a f2f in what seems like EONS ago! "I can't tell the interviewer that all I know about myself is that I've found difinitively that bleach and baking soda are, hands down, the BEST way in my washing machine the best way to deoderize and sterilize soiled sheets...I have no idea who I am other than my father's care taker! And even then I'm not supposed to be that!") And, it IS quite a departure from Theater Arts to International and Comparitive Politics--why? Why now? ( I WANT TO RULE THE WORLD!! Don't believe me? Okay, seriously. I know what it feels like to be invisible, and I'm sick of it. I know what it likes to need even the most basic things and have them no be met....can I say that? )

Then comes the essay of admissions. No more than 500 words. Formal diction, and use secondary sources.  Is that possible? An entire essay in 500 words? (*FLASHBACK!* Remember when we were like in 8th grade and like "OMG ...I CAN'T WRITE 500 WORDS!!! IT'S TOO MUCH!!!" and now I'm like "OMG...I CAN'T WRITE 500 WORDS!!! IT'S NOT ENOUGH!!!! )  In that, she wants an issue of historical importance, current importance...of importance. (I guess I don't count? )

And then...it's mailed in. If I don't get in this time, she said, take some upper level history, Poly Sci, reapply for admission.  Ok, that sounds great. I can do that. Definately. She also mentioned that with my OH SO CLOSE GPA that I might be admitted on "provisional" based on the strength of my essay (No pressure here...)

It's funny: from the beginning, you guys have been reassuring. You guys have said "Hey, if you don't get in on the first pass, there is DEFINATELY a readmissions or some other policy. ASK!" There it is. Thanks. You were right. (I find myself saying that alot...HAVE YOU BEEN CONSPIRING WITH MY SPONSOR?!  )  Thanks again, also, for all your cheerleading. I haven't even told my parents about what I'm doing. And based on how, ahem, supportive they've been  in the past, I figure that the old al anon adage is true: don't go to the hardware store for bread. Don't go to the dry well for water. Go where you know what you are looking for will be.

Thanks guys. It means a lot. A HUGE lot.

The true test of character is not what you do or how you handle the easy situations, but how you contend with the challenges.

Even if you try and don't get in the first go round, you already have a plan b.  Continue with prepretory classes and hit it again.  So you have nothing at all to lose, and experience to gain.

So just go for it and give it your best effort!  You will be fine either way, I have all the confidence in the world in you.

Take care of you!

Good job, it's always easier than we thought it would be isn't it?  Things seem so scary when we build them up.  I had to confront my new daycare person about smakcing my child in the head last night.  I wasn't looking forward to it but it needed to be done.  Guess I should think about that with my meeting woes.  I can speak my piece and never go back! LOL

O.k. I looked for an emoticon with a little head bouncing up and down, wanting to scream "Wheww whoooo!!!" to you!!  Glad you got that meeting over and now you are moving on with what comes next!  OOOHHHH I hated essays, I was never one for lengthy papers--lots of words, until I got older, now I'm with you--especially if I am really motivated by something!!

good luck with the next step!

Thanks for keeping us informed.
