Scratching the holiday to do something I feel good about

The holidays around my house are difficult for me.  We have two sons one is an A/da and the other doesn't want anything to do with the A/da.  Not that I could get them in the same town anyway and the one that is clean never comes around.  The last few years we have had to invite ourselves to his home (250 miles away) for the holiday's and this year I decided I just wasn't going to do that again.

So...hubby and I are going to the facility where a lot of 12 step meetings are held as well as our Al-Anon home group and helping with dinner for the people in recovery that don't have a place to go for Thanksgiving.  We are expecting around 200 people this year so it just sounded like the thing to do for me.  We will still have a thanksgiving feast and the boys are on their own.

Have the best Thanksgiving you can for yourself this year.  HUGS to everyone.

What a great idea - I was just chatting to a friend who is dreading the holiday, and saying that none of it is written in stone - you don't have to spend the holiday with family, you don't have to eat turkey, you don't HAVE to do anything you don't want to, really. Sounds like you've come up with a perfect solution.

Cheers to all you Yanks - enjoy yourself in the healthest and happiest way.

WAY TO GO MO,

There are so many beautiful people in this world who do just those things. They spend time with others and help those less fortunate. Humbling to realize how good some of us really do have it when we look at the big picture.

Let us know how your day went, I'd love to hear.

We had a great dinner and visit today.  Some of the others brought home made goodies which made it even more special.  My Grandma's Corn was a huge success as was the Pumpkin Pie Cake that I took.  One guy brought deviled eggs that he had made by smoking them.  The white of the egg was a smoky color which wasn't real appetising but the eggs themselves were awesome.  When we left there were only a few left, they disappeared about as fast as they appeared.  Next time his fiance comes to a meeting I have got to find out how he makes them.  I have visions of putting eggs in the smoker and them blowing up...  We had people there from AA, Al-Anon, NA and Naranon so it was a successful day.

There were two very special guests that were able to attend.  One girl in the AA program had two sons who were living with her x and 3 hours away.  Last weekend the 4yo boy was playing in the driveway with a ball.  Also in the drive was the SUV which had one of those spare tires mounted on the back door, the back window was also partially down.  The ball went into the back of the SUV and the little boy of course went after it.  He climbed up on the tire to get the ball, lost his balance and caught his neck on the window.  He couldn't get ahold of anything to get back up.  Needless to say the funeral was yesteday.  His mother and little sister were able to attend today and being with her 12 step family was exactly what she needed today.  It also did the rest of us good to see her and be able to give our condolences and let her know that she is not alone in this.  When we left she was standing out in the sun, visiting and actually laughing.  That put a very good end to the afternoon.

If we don't have plans we will probably do this same thing again next year.
