Any info on DUI's?

Hi, so my AH who has been really trying the sober route relapsed, but of course, he relapsed 3 times, he couldn't get it together after the first relapse, nor the second, he two chances to stop his cycle, and instead, he had to wait until things go worse, hit a parked car and got a DUI before he could start on his 'sober work' again.

So this will be his second DUI in 10 years, anyone know what happens the second time around, expensive wise, jail time, what do they do?  I know it's going to be very expensive, and i'm so very bitter and upset because of course now the kids have to suffer, they can't get the things they need because he has to pay for his mistakes.  Now one of my kids braces has to be put off for God only knows how long.

Hi sdisnie,

Sorry to hear about his Dui. My only thought is the laws for dui differ from state to state. So what would happen here is Washington could be very different from what happens where you live.  Take care of u. This too shall pass, and hopefully something good will come out of it.

Greta

First off, I wouldn't judge him necessarily on how many times it takes him to re start his life. You're not his mother. As ideal as it is that he would be able to say "OMG! I can't believe I did that!" it doesn't happen. Secondly, as nice as it was that he made a year, there are people in AA who relapse after 25 years. The disease of alcholism is described as "cunning, baffling, powerful" simply because it keeps the person hostage until their passing.

Secondly, as was mentioned, DUI statutes vary jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Whatever the District Atty decides to do is not up to you and the fact that you're trying to get so much information tells me you're trying to prep for the worst. What if, instead, you started going to Al Anon meetngs? That way, no matter what happens to your husband, you don't have to worry about micromanaging everything. I can re assure you that at the al anon meetings in your area people understand the feeling of "I don't know if I can cope with my husband going to jail (Actually some of our members do have spouses in jail right now and for DUI too!, no I will not break their anonymoty). " Lastly, I think it might be behoove you to make sure you understand that your husband is being taken to task before the courts, not you. You and your husband are not the same person.

Please, go to the Al Anon world website. www.al-anon.alateen.org

sdisnie,

I can so relate to your situation!  The laws are different in each state, so I can't tell you what to expect.  I think Tiger and Greta gave you great info.  Take care of yourself, and do what you have to do for yourself.

((((hugs))))

I don’t mean to be negative but brace your self for the worst thing ever.  My A 2nd one in 10 years we are still going through litigation 9 months later.  Get a good Lawyer and try to get it reduced to reckless driving it won’t be easy it is very expensive.  My A is stupid enough to do it again I’m sure.  I have a friend her A had 3 he went to Jail.  Good luck I know how hard it is.

Yep Joni your right it is a felony in Canada. It all depends on the judge if you get jail time or not. I know that the fines are steep.
