September 21 Courage to Change - Fear

Today's reading discusses how living with the disease of alcoholism led the person to become a fearful person dreading change. They preferred familiar chaos rather than change because they felt some control over what was familiar. The reading states that this sense of control is an illusion and that Al-anon reminds us that we are powerless over alcoholism as well as many things in life. Change is inevitable.

With the Al-anon program the person learns to walk through their fears with the help of a higher power and gains trust in that higher power to know what they need and when.

Today's Quote - We may wonder how we are going to get through all the stages and phases, the levels of growth and recovery... Knowing we are not alone, often quiets our fears and helps us gain perspective.

I'm very grateful to have the Al-anon program to practice in day to day life. I will always have fears but with a loving higher power and others in the program I can work through them. The Serenity Prayer is one tool in such times that helps me to regain my perspective. Progress is in "Courage to Change the thing I can." Working as a team with my higher power, I make progress one day at a time to Let Go and Let God guide me to the next right actions in my life and care for me throughout the changes. Trust has come with time and experience. I may exhibit doubt in the capabilities of my higher power when fearful  feelings arise but I can point with gratitude to the positive changes in my life as a result of the program and a loving hp. With love and thanks I choose to live fully accepting lessons from my higher power and learning and growing from them. I am not powerless to make changes for the better by using past recovery lessons and what I have learned from them. When I work it, my contact with my higher power is greater and my life feels fuller.

TT thanks for your service and inspiring share. I think I was born with a fear-based personality, which was enhanced by a dysfunctional family and two alcoholic spouses. It's taken years of work to overcome being afraid of my own shadow, and dealing with fear has become lessened by my practicing alanon in all it's aspects. As said above, there will always be some fear in life--at the moment my sibling is facing horrible cancer. I'm hanging on with the help of this program.
