Today's writer addresses the two words that are the basis of much worry, resentment and unnecessary interference when dealing with alcoholics: What if...
Imagining negative results and outcomes can become an unhealthy habit that, more often than not, needlessly darkens our every horizon and reduces our ability to effectively handle situations that actually develop.
Reminder Live one day at a time...Don't project our fears onto the future, simply address what actually needs to be done.
"It is a vain and unprofitable thing to conceive either grief or joy for future things which perhaps will never come about." - Unattributed -------------------- This concept is Alanon gold. The concept of living in the moment, One Day at a Time, is one of the most important in my recovery.
The Program has helped me see that much of pain I felt was manufactured from anticipated, but not experienced events. Remaining present, in the moment, significantly reduces the emotional mileage I travel and leaves more energy for important things.

"...when we try to control others, we lose the ability to manage our own lives." - Paths to Recovery
Thanks Paul for your service and great share. ODAT is such an important part of my recovery. For years I lived in the past and future. I never experienced "today." But that's all changed with this program. Another saying I heard long ago was: keep your head over your feet--in doing that, I'm in today, in this moment.
I love the concept of keeping my head over my feet. When I ski I often say as a mantra, "don't let the skies ski you, you ski the skies" so this make perfect sense to me. Thank you
