HUMOR IN RECOVERY

When I take a look at the disease of alcoholism from the distance of years of detachment that my recovery has put between us, I can often have a good chuckle for myself. What a gift that is considering all the pain and suffering I once felt.

When I see how someone goes from one alcoholic home and marries into another I see it as the "same circus, just a different tent."

I can remember feverishly dumping out the alcohol of the binge drinkers in my family and then making all the same phone calls to area detox facilities, trying desparately to "fix" the situation and get them help. Dismantling the cars so they could not drive drunk. Calling taxi companies and telling them not to deliver. (doing the same things over and over about every 6 weeks and expecting different results).

Well one nice spring evening it was really going to be different. After all, I had found a new detox for her to try . It was way up in the mountains of the next state north of us; So, I drive all the way up there and the alcoholic off, leaving only after talking to the doctors about the great treatment plan at this special place. I then drive 2 hrs. straight home, only stopping for a quick coffee. Guess who beat me home in a taxi-cab and was sitting on the sofa with a beer? She asks, "what took you so long?" This truly is the insanity of the disease that they talk about in Al-anon.

THE 12 steps r not 4 those NEED it but 4 those who WANT it

And unless I decide to change things one day at a time, I will keep seeking out those same people in my life and it will be the same circus—different clowns. And those old geographical cures are just "the same circus—different towns."

wowee sha! thanks for sharing, i got a little chuckle out of that one. there is some stuff that i had done when i was living with my ex A boyfriend that i can look back on and laugh too. i played into a bit of the drama at times , i won't be specific, but use your imagination. i'm a pretty calm person, so when i look back at just my behavior of slamming doors, etc, it is kind of funny.

thanks for bringing some humor into my day :)

love, christine
