The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I am completely new to al anon. Im not sure where to start. My husband is an alcoholic and thats why Im interested in al anon. I am planning on joining a meeting the next time one is available. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!
I discovered Alanon upon recommendation by a healthcare worker, at the time didn't even know the difference between AA and Alanon. I hesitantly went to a meeting after doing a quick online review, not thrilled about going but willing to try anything after exhausting all of my ideas and strategies to deal with my partner's drinking.
I found a group of individuals who understood my frustration, anger, disbelief yet did not demand that I follow any group rules or demands. I learned some very practical and immensely helpful perspectives and tools that helped me immediately when dealing with someone whose alcohol use was concerning, but later in all areas in my life and relationships.
I thought it was the drinker who had and was causing all of the problems, it turned out that I had undergone many changes myself. I saw areas I could make adjustments to reduce the felt insanity in my life.
I like to research and dig in, I got the book 'Paths to Recovery - ALAnon's Steps, Traditions, and Concepts'. That is certainly not necessary for newcomers, that was simply what worked for me, but I was able to get an overview of the approach that Alanon suggests and it made sense, brought clarity that I hadn't felt on the topic with previous efforts.
I am sure others will share a bit of their journey, so glad you stopped by! Someone usually shares a review of one of the daily readers that discusses an Alanon concept and might give you some initial insight into how it works. Ask any questions, see you around

Another welcome to you Leena :). I came to alanon to fix my A and I have ended up learning how to fix myself! I didn't know I needed fixing as I was a total wreck from my experience with my A. I have learned so many useful, important, and applicable tools for living, that give me experience, strength, and hope to all areas of my life. I hope you will give us a try. You can also look for a zoom meeting if covid is high in your area.
