Brand Spanking New

Brand new to this group and looking for advice. I am confident that I cannot get through this by myself but I donât know where to start. I have been online reading for hours and listened to a phone meeting this morning. Everyone was sharing about their own recovery I am completely overwhelmed. Is there an Alanon for Dummies or a first book to get started? I donât know where to start.

Welcome Rosepro We have a posing entitled:"Frequently asked questions " that could d be a good starting point for the journey. Here is the link :alanon.activeboard.com/t13820090/frequently-asked-questions/

Alanon holds face o face meetings in most communities n the hotline number is found in the white pages Check for Beginner meetings as they will have the literature that is most helpful. Here are a few title How alanon works , Paths to recovery and When I got busy I got better

If you are involved with the dreadful disease of alcoholism you are correct in believing that you cannot do this alone Alanon was established to offer support to friends and family of alcoholics. Since this is a disease and we are powerless over it, t he program urges us to keep the focus on ourelves so we can discover what we may be doing to hurt ourselves

You are not alone and there is hope

Welcome to MIP Rosepro - glad you found us and so glad that you joined right in. I too would suggest searching if local Al-Anon meetings happen in your area, and find the courage to attend. Al-Anon gave me a safe place to listen, learn, heal and deal from the effects of alcoholism in others.

Most Al-Anon meetings also have literature which we do lean into and rely on. There are a variety of publications, and we tend to find what works best. There is one that's actually called, "How Al-Anon works" and it may help you in the beginning. If you find local meetings and begin attending, more will be revealed and you'll quickly understand more.

Know that you are not alone and we all start 'there'....wherever there is. Please keep coming back - there is hope and help in recovery!

Hey, Rose, welcome! I too encourage you to attend face to face meetings and get support off-line as well, though this online group is great too! The meetings I attend include a newcomer welcome that is being read that sheds some light on what Al-Anon program is, and some literature. This link might be helpful as well: al-anon.org/newcomers/

Keep coming back :)

Aloha Rosepro glad you are here and hopeful that The program does for you what it did for my life.  I wasn't into sitting in a room with many others who were or had been affected by someone else's drinking because I didn't knw about alcoholism and I didn't know that I didn't know.  I was there by suggestion which I assumed were all crazy.

When I first started to listen I heard "we do not give advise" so I was done for...I would not get the solutions or the help with them and I left.  Nothing made sense to me and I thought it was all BS.  It took me several trips thru the doors of the meeting rooms till I would just sit and listen with an open mind and many "one on one" conversations with the old timers before I would "get it" and when I got it I had to take it with the slogan "Easy Does It" because the disease and what it is all about and how much harm it causes was overwhelming.   I learned to trust the slogan One Day At A Time and to put one foot in front of the other while applying patience with my growth.  It was harder then and not impossible so I kept coming back and kept working it. It works when we work it and being Brand Spanking New becomes and awesome journey.

I learned to listen to and take the suggestions of the fellowship that came before me and who had their sanity restored and their lives intact.  Along with the rest of the MIP fellowship I am in support of your recovery.    Keep coming back.

Look for and find Al-Anon meetings in your area in the white pages of your telephone book.  We are all over this planet.  If you have difficulty doing that we have on line meetings twice daily here.  Bring and open mind and courage to change the things you can.   (((((hugs))))) smile
