Acceptance

Hello and happy Saturday to all!  I have some progress to report for myself....and I guess it boils down to the word acceptance.  I accept that the only thing that can change AH is AH and his higher power.

AH was recently diagnosed with yet another health issue related to alcohol.  After the doctor visit he said, "Well, I guess it really is time to stop drinking."  I just gave a small smile and nodded in acknowledgement.  However, rather than getting all happy and thinking "Finally!" as I would have in the past, I knew that most likely nothing will change because I heard this many times before.  I truly believe he meant it in the moment; that for that brief period of time, he let it in.  He really let in what alcohol is doing to him.  As in the past though, he is already changing the story plot of what is causing his issue.  It is his age, his past profession, his poor genes, etc.  He's just about in full denial mode already on this.  I accept it.  While there is always hope, I accept that he will most likely never stop drinking.  I am not angry or even disappointed, because I accept it is what it is.

I wouldn't have this mind-set without al-anon.  I would be helping him plan his recovery and taking responsibility for him following through.  No more.   So, just another step on this journey.  Thanks to all of you for your posts and responses.  Even if I don't post, I come to this site every single day and tuck away a new piece of information, or ESH.

Hugs -  Ellen

(((Ellen))) - great acceptance and program work! Keep doing what you're doing because it's working for you even if you have doubts at times. I'm glad that you can see your progress - for me, that always helped me realize my efforts were worth it! Sending both of you positive thoughts and prayers!

(((El))) Thank you for your share. Sending you positive thoughts and prayers as well. I admire your progress and ability to practice acceptance in something so emotionally charged. I too have struggled in the past with acceptance of my AH and his drinking. Acceptance brought me peace as well and so I wish you much peace with this too. HUGS.
