Hi

Hi all,

i have just joined but been looking over the forum for some time trying to make sense of things.

I have an AW who has been drinking for at least 20 years. She has tried to stop many times before but with no success, even a short spell in AA.

She is currently in recovery with AA and has been for the past several weeks. So far she seems to be staying sober, attending meeting, reading big book and following steps.

Life is difficult at the minute with her getting used to recovery and me getting used to her not drinking/ confronting issues of the past.

Thanks for reading and i look forward to now contributing.

Welcome Pacman Glad that you shared and are now intending to participate with our MIP family. Please do search out alanon face to face meetings held in most communities and attend. It is there you will be able to break the isolation caused by living with this dreadful disease and develop new tools to live by that will help you see the wreckage of the past in a new light.
There is hope

Nice to meet you Pacman.
It's good news that Ms Pacman is in recovery currently but of course you can't guarantee what her future will hold so it's even better news that you are reaching out for help and confronting your own issues with the past etc. Al-anon can help you to find your own peace and serenity regardless of what those around you do or do not do and you surely deserve that!
I look forward to your contributing as well and hope that you will also seek out meetings and support from other al-anoners. Welcome aboard!

Hello Pacman - welcome to MIP. Glad that you found us and joined right in. Sending prayers of support for your recovery as well as your spouse's recovery. We try really hard to focus on One Day at a Time in recovery, so just for today - be gentle with you and stay present in the moment...that's what carried me when I was first new...

As Betty suggests, meetings are so very helpful in finding local support. In meetings is where I found that I was not alone, and that no matter what my qualifier(s) did or did not do, I could carry forward on my own journey to peace and hopefully joy.

The program also suggests literature, steps, sponsor, etc. and we each get to use the tools in the way that makes best sense for ourselves. It's been a game-changer for my life and I found hope and help that saved my sanity.

Keep coming back - there is hope and help always in recovery!

Aloha Pacman and welcome to the family.  I have to laugh because the image of the Pacman as myself in the disease of alcoholism was right on even considering the sounds that came from the game.  I am glad that you found us because another voice from another member helps us all to escape the insanity of this disease.  I am grateful that she found help in AA...she will get her life saved if she works that program honestly and daily and finds that Higher Power greater than the chemical alcohol and all of the insane power that it reveals.  You know....

The suggestions you receive on this board come from those of us who have been where you are at now exactly and learned from others who had also been there themselves and then reached out for help and found it.   The description of the insanity of alcoholism fit me to a T when I first found the programs of recovery and then I had to go on my own will power for a while getting properly insane and powerless.  I had to understand and know and accept that I knew nothing about our disease and didn't even know that I didn't know.

Finding the program, listening and learning the program, practicing the program more and more on a daily basis saved my life and by miracle hers also I pray she is still sober because she exemplified the beauty of sobriety so very well and my Higher Power often used her to teach me to find the serenity and sanity I craved.

Welcome...stick around...ask questions...listen, learn and practice what you hear.    ((((Hugs)))) smile
