from the beginning- looking for guidance

Recently someone close to me reached out for help for the first time. I told them that if they are going to work on it, then I am going to be right there with them. My first step is finding someplace with long term recovery, but I have no idea where to start.

I have a few names and numbers for places near here but I'm struggling to find someplace to fit this need. The extended stay, etc. I'm really just looking for a little guidance. How to start this process. Anything would help!

You have just reached out and that is how we all started stj.  Our program is about progress and not perfection so be patient and keep reaching out and asking.  We do this recovery journey one day at a time and then we find the sanity and serenity we hear others talk about and smile.  I suggest you find face to face Al-Anon meetings in your area from within the white pages of your local telephone book.  Find out where and when they get together and then go.  When there look over the literature table for the literature we use on a daily basis.  Enjoy the meeting and the fellowship and make up your mind to go back to the next one and stay in the day...we do this one day at a time.   (((((hugs))))) smile   Keep coming back here also.

I am not clear on the type of help you are looking for If in helping your friend you are attempting to find a recovery place for them then I would suggest calling the AA hotline and ask for a referral They helped me many years ago.
If you are looking for long term recovery for yourself (the freind or family of an alcoholic ) as Jerry suggests, I would check out alanon hot line in the white palges and ask for the location of face to face meetings in your community.
Keep coming back here as well.
