My 28-year-old son has struggled with addiction since he was in his teens. He has worked a lot of jobs over the years and drifted from one place to another. Every time he gets in a position where he might make progress, his addictive behavior pops up and causes disaster. He was just released from 2 months in jail for a possession charge. I think he has truly hit bottom. He's homeless and has lost all his possessions, which were few. I went into debt last year to pay for a 30-day program. I'm still making payments on that. So now he's back in California and really needs to get in a program. He admits that he needs structure! He actually did well in jail, became a trustee on day three! Now he's been out on the street for a week and looking for help. What a quagmire! I want him to make the calls and do the applications himself, but the process is so confusing. I don't know if he can do this on his own. I'm out of money mostly because of my enabling behavior. I guess I'm venting........ but what is a person who has no resources supposed to do? He wants to work, is willing to work but who's going to give him a break. I'm afraid he will give up! How can I help but still make him take the lead?
