Getting help

My 28-year-old son has struggled with addiction since he was in his teens. He has worked a lot of jobs over the years and drifted from one place to another. Every time he gets in a position where he might make progress, his addictive behavior pops up and causes disaster. He was just released from 2 months in jail for a possession charge. I think he has truly hit bottom. He's homeless and has lost all his possessions, which were few. I went into debt last year to pay for a 30-day program. I'm still making payments on that. So now he's back in California and really needs to get in a program. He admits that he needs structure! He actually did well in jail, became a trustee on day three! Now he's been out on the street for a week and looking for help.What a quagmire! I want him to make the calls and do the applications himself, but the process is so confusing. I don't know if he can do this on his own. I'm out of money mostly because of my enabling behavior. I guess I'm venting........ but what is a person who has no resources supposed to do? He wants to work, is willing to work but who's going to give him a break. I'm afraid he will give up! How can I help but still make him take the lead?

Carolm, welcome to MIP.

I can understand everything you have described and truly feel

for you and your son's predicament!

I did some research, concerning California's social service rehab

availability  ... http://www.addicted.org/california-long-term-drug-rehab.html

It would be wise to suggest, but not control, and let your son

do the actual contacting of any organizations or programs you find.

Detaching with love and empathy is an Al-anon tool that is very helpful

under these circumstances.  Please consider joining a local chapter of

Al-anon - http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/local-meetings

it is there you will get the support you need to help recover yourself

from the damage all of the stress has caused you due to your son's

addiction.  Please know you are not alone and please continue to

let us know how you are doing.  {{HUGS}}
