Local alanon meetings are all at night or are "closed" meetings

I come to this online message board to learn the alanon tools because all the meetings that are a reasonable driving distance for me are either listed as closed or are at night (I dont drive at night). There are lots of AA meetings that are open or in the daytime, but not alanon. Can I get a sponsor through this online resource? (I assume "closed" means the meeting isn't allowing new people to join)

I believe a "closed" meeting is a meeting at which only Al-Anoners (new or old) attend, rather than bringing along family members or other spectators.  I've heard of closed AA meetings but not closed Al-Anon meetings.  Maybe others will help out with this one.

((Ignutah ))" Closed meetings indicates that only the people who live with or haved lived with the problem of alcoholism are welcome.
"Open" meetings welcome everyone- including students or anyone doing research on the subject.

WOOT! Looks like you can go to some f2f meetings Ignutah!! You will be amazed at how they will help. I am always amazed when I hear parents' stories at meetings, I'm sure it will help you as well.

Glad you got clarity by posting about this. It may help others too.  Great that you can now attend f2f.  Hope you post your experience after your first meeting. Keep coming back! TT

Oh I'm so glad you asked the question because breaking the isolation is sooo important. I didn't know there were such things as "closed" Alanon meetings until my sponsor started the Friday night meeting as "open". LOL!!

Enjoy your meeting!!

Ignutah, don't feel bad, I thought the same thing as many of the ones here are also closed... I have yet to go to a f2f meeting but am working up the courage to do so. I think for the first few I would prefer a closed meeting actually. (less people, and I have issues with crowds these days) but hey there is always the back of the room right! ha!   Good luck with your first meeting. please join us here also for the meetings, they are awesome!

Glad you posted here to find out! Closed just means only people who have been affected by the disease can attend - no students doing research or random spectators, etc. You are certainly welcome there!
