My son

My son is 28 years old. He started drinking heavily in college. He moved home with us in his last year of law school. I was so sad when I realized he was an alcoholic. He managed to finish law school in spite of his addition. He started getting really sick and was hospitalized with acute pancreatitis which resulted in multi organ failure. He was given a 5% chance of survival but after two weeks in ICU and another week in the hospital he recovered. Now three years later he is still drinking. He has an appt for out patient rehab in a week and a half. He won't go to AA and doesn't believe in God. I am so sad and worried. Please pray for him. I am hopeful but just don't know...

Prayers on the way for you and for your son.
Unfortunately there's really nothing we can do to make an alcoholic get well, we can only take good care of ourselves and even when someone is very sick and won't recover, that in itself is a kindness because at least we don't make them responsible for damaging our lives too, if that makes sense. And sometimes people actually do seek recovery when they realise that no-one else is going to try to save them.
Al-anon can help you take a step back from his illness and find peace and comfort regardless of what he chooses to do. Have you ever attended a meeting? It's a great place to start

Prayers for you and your son Kodydog. I hope that you definitely go to Al-Anon meetings and work the steps just for your own sanity and serenity.

I hope you will get to a meeting and learn all about where he ends and you start. Take care of yourself and you will be a great example to him.

I was not feeling blessed or touched by God when I first got sober. Nobody comes into AA with perfect faith. For me, I got so desperate that I didn't care if I turned into a fundamentalist religious person (which didn't happen). I just didn't want to live like I was any more. I went to AA anyhow and took suggestions and started seeing God after I got there.  Anyhow, welcome to alanon and know you are not alone. There is hope for his recovery (hey...I did it so....) and, regardless of him, you can utilize alanon to help you stay centered and content.
