Hi i am a new member at the suggestion of my mom to try it out and see if it helps me. First let me say i have just realized that at the age of 17 i was an alcoholic at the time i didn't think i was a couple years later i hit rock bottom and decided a change was in order. I meet my boyfriend online and had talked to him for a few months prior to my rock bottom hit and when i did i decided to move to his state and live with him and his family. 8 years since i moved i have not drank or did drugs since. I have two beautiful children and have a mostly happy life, that if i think about it now wouldn't have had i stayed in that situation. Unfortunately that is not why i joined al anon, i have an alcoholic brother who lives with me. Sorry in advance for the long post but i have alot on my chest. So for a little back story, my mom and dad divorce when were young kids because of my dads alcoholic and abusive behavior towards my mom. I have two older brothers from my moms first marriage so when the split happened they went with her and me and my younger brother went with my dad who after awhile sobered up. Unfortunately though he was never abusive to us his new girlfriend was, especially towards my younger brother. We did eventually with help from my school principal and social worker move out of my dads and lived my mom and step dad. The whole thing affected me differently than him, i was able to move past it he was not. So because both my mom and stepdad had to work to support us, as we got older we were home by ourselfs alot and i had to take care of him not in the same way as when we were living with our dad but nonetheless still had to. So he sees me as a mother figure and when i moved six months later he moved up her with me. Hestarted drinking when i was in my downward spiral and he moved up he thought it was gonna be the same but it wawasn't i stopped drinking. He was suppose to finish high school up here because he stopped going to school down there and all three of parents thought he would do better up here with me. It didn't happen, some situation came up and me and my boyfriend where we had to move and my brother stayed with my boyfriends grandma. I still talked to him everyday but i notice and he later admitted he was getting depressed and homesick, so we rode the bus together all the way back home where he moved back in with my dad and i came back to my new home. He did go back to high school and graduated and found a job, i thought he was doing good, still drinking, but taking care of his responsibilities. I get a call late night from one of his friends saying he is in the hospital, that he had taken a bat(after an altercation with another friend) and beat himself with it reapeatly till his face was black and blue, i called my mom and dad and told them despite there d ifences they needed to be there for him and not argue with each other. So after discussions with them and his friend who called me it was decided he move back up here again. He was still depressed and drinking we had alot of issues with it because i would come home and he'd be passes out on my bed or to drunk to walk or being loud and waking up my then 2 yr son, he had another drunk break down and told me and my mother in law (what i like to call my boyfriends mom) he wanted to kill himself and no cared about him, so we ended up calling the police, who sent him to detox and had him evaluate.now my brothers not dumb he told them exactly what they wanted to hear and they let him go. Hes was mad at us but never said he was gonna kill himself again.he finally got into college and meet some friends and had an appartment with them but due to his drinking his grades fell and financial aid got cut off. Him and his friends got kicked out of there apartment. He moved back in with me and said just until he finds a job and appeals his financial aid. I told him no drinking at my house, i dont care if you go out and drink with friends whatever but i dont want it here around my kids and when hes drunk not to be around me because it always ends in argument . For awhile he would abide by it then he would go back to being drunk and pass in out anywhere he pleases, being abnoxus, being rough with the kids and seeking me out for an argument. I have laid ground rules and tried to meet him half way but it dont seem to work.he doesnt pay rent here or buy groceries or help with keeping the house clean. All ive asked him to do is wash the dished because he eats and to help chop wood in the winter time and he doesnt want to do any of that. He doesnt have a job and when he does he spends his money on alcohol and drugs. He lies to me about being drunk ( im not stupid). He degrades me to other people now, like i live in a s**y house(which im in the process of remodeling and have completed the living room) have a s***ty job ( which i am happy with and make good money) and i argue to much with my boyfriend (usual its just about whose doing the dishes or the laundry). Every time he come home drunk he says i dont listen to him and see things from his point of view and i dont care about him. This last argument he told me i look at him how my dads girfriend( the one that abused us) use to. I have never treated him that way and it hurt me that he thinks of me that way. I dont know what to do anymore i yelled pleaded cried. This last time i told him his friends are not allowed at my house because they dont clean up after themselves and he dont clean up after them either, he needed to look for a job so he can find his own place and i went as far as telling him he needed to go to AA and would be there to support him he says he dont need it. I know i cant help him if he dont want help but i dont know what else to do. Im tired of having to defend myself and it makes me feel like my family thinks i live horribly too. I am happy in all aspects of my life except this. The last two days has been so emotional for me angry sad lost. How do i detach with love when if feel like i cant detach? Sometimes i feel like i set this in motion with my drinkin, i know its not my fault but i feel as if had i been a better rolemodel he would not be this way.My boyfriend and mother in law both see how it affects me and makes me question myself and support me the best they can but i feel i need a little extra support in trying to dealing with my A brother. Thank you for reading my post and sorry its so long any insight would be helpful and appreciated.

Wow. First off...I want to commend you on literally raising your little brother and straightening yourself out and having your own kids and being a good mom while working and all of that. You are AWESOME! Next, I want to tell you to stop being hard on yourself. In the way things are "supposed to go" in life, you would have never been raising him in the first place. The fact that you have done as much parenting and caretaking of your brother is amazing and you deserve ZERO criticism (even if it may be time to start letting go). You did the best you could and siblings raising other siblings just blows my mind in terms of stepping up to the plate in life. You said it's not your fault. Intellectually you know this, but you still verbalize things suggesting that it somehow IS and that he IS your responsibility when he really isn't. You have stepped in for people that really were tasked with raising him (his parents) and you do not deserve ANY criticism for the job you are doing or did. You don't deserve that from them (and I know you said they are supportive) but you especially don't deserve it from him or from yourself.
It sounds like you are a natural caretaker and have a caretaker streak in you that could be considered enabling towards your brother. That doesn't make you bad in the least. It just means you guys developed some dysfunctional roles from growing up in chaos. You rebelled a bit too but then sounds like you also swung back in the other direction by overcompensating for the care of everyone else at the expense of yourself. I don't know. I can hypothesize all day and I probably shouldn't. I can only imagine that without strong parental guidance growing up, you would literally feel like your brother's keeper and it would be very hard to let him go. Almost like he is your first born child.
Alanon is the right place. There are so many tools and there is so much for you to learn. I am hearing a bazillion things in your post that alanon can help with and can aid you to address. It does sound like your brother is engaging in totally unacceptable behaviors and he is actually being emotionally abusive to you. Alanon is where you will learn to give yourself permission to take care of self. People typically have a "journey" in alanon also. They don't just go "Ok...joining alanon now and I'm detaching. There I did it. I'm detached now." No. It takes time and you only need to start this journey. In fact, you just did start it by reaching out here.
Welcome, and keep coming back. I salute you for your caring, but it's time for you to take care of you and Alanon can help.

Welcome myBrother's Keeper, I am glad that you reached out and were able to share with such honesty and clarity. I agree you have certainly faced many hardships with courage and fortitude.
Alcoholism is a dreadful, chronic, progressive disease over which were powerless. Nothing the alcoholic says should be taken personal as it is the disease talking and has nothing to do with us. Detaching is a powerful tool that I learned in Al-Anon but it takes practice and simple steps to get there.
Al-Anon face-to-face meetings will offer you the support that is so very important to your own mental health and recovery. The hotline number is kept in the white pages and I urge you to call. It is here that I was able to break the isolation caused by the growing up in the disease of alcoholism, connect with others who understood as few others could, and develop new important constructive tools to live by. My self-esteem and self-worth blossomed and I was able to learn how to keep the focus on myself and my own needs while loving others.
I, too, acted more as a mother to my younger sister due to my mother's mental illness. I still struggle with how much involvement is too much, and where my adult boundaries should be. These are things that I am exploring and working on in AlAnon, and I am learning a lot.
I hope that you keep coming back and I hope that you find some good face to face meetings as well. AlAnon has tools that help. For me, the most important tool I have in my toolbox is being gentle with myself and allowing myself to practice using the tools, and starting new each day. I might not always respond perfectly to a given situation, but with AlAnon, I have found that my responses, even when not absolutely perfect, are a sight better than my responses prior to AlAnon.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes i greatly appreciate it. Its just been so tough and a never-ending battle with my brother. I do look at him as my child and it is hard to see him like this because i do care. Pinkchip reading your response it does make me feel better being acknowledged that i have come so far dont get me wrong i get told by family and friend s but its different hearing from someone who is totally outside the box. They are suporting me as i go through this but i think some outside input would be helpful. I have really never thought of what he says to me as emotional abuse until you said it. I know face to face meeting would be more helpful to me but with the way my work schedule is and having two small children needing my attention too its a bit hard. Im hoping that maybe using this sight and chat room it may make things easier to get help and extra support while still being mommy.
We also have on line meetings here that are very helpful, Here is the schedule:
Morning Meetings
Mon. - Fri. at 9am EST
Sat. - Sun at 10am EST
Each Sunday morning at 10 am EST, we will be having a Spiritual meeting with a topic relating to the Spiritual part of our program.
Night Meetings
Mon-Saturday 9PM eastern time
Sunday 7PM eastern time
Each Thursday night at 9PM EST, we will be having a Step/Tradition Meeting to help new people get to know and understand how to work the 12 steps.
After going through one Step per week, and getting through the 12 of them, we then start a Tradition a week on this same night.
I am so glad you are here at MIP! I give you huge kudos for raising your brother, which was way more responsibility than most would or could handle, but you took it on and did it. Now that he is grown I believe you are right it is time for him to fly from the nest. It is a hard lesson learned and it takes tough love which may be hard for you, but oh the serenity that comes with detaching and letting the responsibility of grown people back on them is so freeing! There is a book series "Getting Them Sober" by Toby Rice Drews and she wrote several about spouses, but the children one may apply more to you being the Mom figure. Al-anon face to face meetings, my sponsor and MIP helped me to let go of the things I was trying to control that weren't in my hula hoop to control. I am sending you much love and support on your journey and glad you are here!

WOW... A lot of this Sounds Like a Place I Lived for a Very Long Time...
I Found Al-Anon Because I Just Lost My AFather to this Disease, and I Was on a Mission to SAVE my Baby Brother from the Same Life My Father had... He was On a Downward Spiral and I wasn't going to LET HIM Fall... My Parents Split when I was 9 My Big Sis 13 & My Baby Bro 3... My Big Sis was Out Finding her Own Addictions at this time, and I was the One Left at home to Care for My Baby brother... My Mom Worked three Jobs trying to keep food on the Table and Lights on, so she wasn't present in our lives very often...
I Completely relate to the Emotions of Feeling Like it was MY Fault that HE was Taking the Wrong Path, because After All it was MY Job (I Felt) To Raise him Right, and Keep him free from Harm... All the Things You Speak of bring back so Many Memories for me, Chasing him down, Engaging with his Friends to See what he was Into, Giving him Hell When he Stepped out of Line, Literally DRAGGING him to School so he Would Get his Diploma...Speaking with his Principle and Guidance Counselors, You Name it... I was On Top of It! Reaching out to Try and Keep him On Task...
I Even Took Off And Moved a Couple States away, thinking the Separation would at Least Allow me Some Sanity from all the Drama in our Alcoholic Home...
When I Got here, I Learned that "I TOO" Needed Saved, From all the "Caretaking" I Needed Saved From my Very Own Addictions, and I'm Happy to say I Too am Now 4+ years Sober... My Abrother Still Drinks, and Still Choose the Life he Lives, and Even tho You View your Brother as Your Child... He is Not a Child... And I have Learned with My Brother, Even Buying Him a Pack of Smokes was Enabling him.. Because If I Buy them, then he doesn't have to Work for them.. I Had to get a Tough Skin when Dealing with him Once I Myself Found Recovery... I had to Tell Him NO.. I Will Not Drive you to Your Friends house! I Will Not Buy you Smokes, I Will Not Let you Stay in my Home with My Son, because you don't follow the Rules... and My Son will Not Be Raised in the Presents of His Insanity...
Boundaries I have learned are HUGE When Dealing with My Addicts... and if they Can't keep up with the Simple Chores of "Dishes" then they wouldn't still be Using me as a walking Mat... This Program, These People on this Board, are some of the Most Kind hearted, Loving, And Supportive People you will Meet... But We do have to do the "Hard Work" if we Want our Insanity to Stop...
I know what its like Growing up with a Drunk in my House, and I Can tell you... I STILL Have Nightmares of those encounters.. Its Something that Never Leaves, and us Kids deserve Better...
You have Done an AMAZING Job with all that has been Dropped in your Lap, but He is NOT Your Responsibility... He needed to be Responsible for himself, or things will Never Change, and for Me that Meant He had to go to Jail for a While, He had to Loose his Kids for a Year, He had to Loose Everything... Including ME! NOW... My Brother is Still an Alcoholic he is Still without Recovery, but he has Man-ed Up in Many Parts of his life, He now has a Lady that has Loved Him into Life... He Now Has Custody of his Children, a Place of His Own, a Job, and a Rather Stable Life Style, his Drinking has Slowed, but Not STOPPED like I Would like, but he at least isn't Drowning in his Own ICK and Taking me with him, but I HAD TOO Cut the Cord, and Allow him to see what the Consequences of HIS OWN ACTIONS Looked Like... Not How Many times I Would Jump in a Save him...
I Still Love & Adore My Brother, and We Now carry a Respect that was Lacked for Years! But I Could have NEVER Done what I Did, had it not been for the People Here that Showed Me Thee Most Amazing Support, they Never let me down, and was Always ready to Pick me up on days, I Just didn't think I Could stick to it without Falling back to being his Caretaker...
So Glad you are Here... Please Take what you like and Leave the Rest... We all Share Life Challenges differently, but this is an Amazing Place to Get your Feet Wet and Learn to Better Care for You and Your Kids, and Allow your Brother to Grow Up and See Just how Bad he "Thinks" He has it...
WELCOME To Our FAMILY... Once you Enter, You Never want to Leave :) I've been Here over 6 years, and it truly has been my Life Line, and I Hope you Find it Just as Useful... Please know even if you find the Courage to tell your Abrother NO.. For What ever comes your Way, it Doesn't Make you A Bad Person... It Makes you a True Example of a Leader, and he will Love you forever, even when at times, you are his easiest Target Only Because you are the One Closest to him... You Got this...
Sorry For the Long Post... But ya hit a Few Heart strings, and I hope it is Helpful ;) Please Know you are Welcome to PM Me on here as well... The Door to recovery is Always open...
Thank you so much jozie all lot of what you said is exactly how i feel. I know i have to cut the cord with him, my MIL (mother in law) has told me that before too because she does see him and how he treats me and how he (i guess the best term i can think of) uses me. I guess one of my biggest issues is when he goes into one of drunken moments and i get ready to kick him out i call My mom and tell her what's going on and she gets upset and tells me i dont really want to throw him out, where's he gonna go you need to talk to him when hes sober. If it was my son would you do that to him? i do see her point of veview sometimes because she doesnt see him or us everyday so she dont experience it the way i do, but it is frustrating. She is his biggest enabler because he has guilt tripped her into believing that she has abounded him and only helps me out. I have told her to stop sending money and if she wants to send him stuff like clothes or notebooks for college, but it only lasted so long.
But on a different note after reading these responses i think i do have the strength to let him go if he falls back into his old way, because right now he is trying to look for a job and seeking a councillor (not for his drinking unfortunately). And im gonna talk to my family and ask them for the support if it happens so i dont cave in again. Right now the past few days has been on the up side but from past experiences it only last so long. I do hope he doesnt fall back into his old ways but i will be prepared if his does for the saintly of my self.
Thank you all so much and i will keep coming back because even just this little bit has helped me so much :)
Once again...I applaud you for not ripping your mom's head off. My initial response would have been "Yeah...He's not my kid. He's not a kid period. He's not even my son. He's a grown man and he needs to have consequences. Period." But I know that is rather harsh to your mom. I dunno. Alanon is where you work on these boundary issues. Sounds like your mom is really treading on you as well.
Please keep coming back and remember that you are a grown responsible person and that you do not have to check with your mom when you decide to act in your own best interest . Naturally she will respond as she does: she does not want him on her doorstep.
Wow, I love your post and the ESH you have received, keep coming back. Al-anon face to face meetings, my sponsor, the books and MIP have helped to change me from the inside out! Sending you much love and support!
