Type of Alanoner

Are there different types of us, here at Al-anon, in the way there are different types of alcoholics? The problem drinker has problems that stop when they stop drinking, the alcoholic stops drinking and the problem persists unless treated properly, usually through like minded people.

Can it be that some people are relatively healthy thinkers, get in tow with an alcoholic, gets a bit mixed up in the disease but when they put down the alcoholic they go back to their 'normal' lives, relatively 'normal' thinking? Is this the reason why some people come and go?

If I was comparing myself to an alcoholic, I'm the full on, over and over again until complete surrender type of alcoholic. I've accepted that I will be a life long member of Al-anon and that as soon as I stop working it, my problems return, my thinking disease returns and my life goes back into the dark. Im coming to see that there is little difference between me and alcoholics. We kind of are the same, its the same thinking disorder that we have, the feeling different, low self esteem from an early age type of thinking. The only difference is the drinker 'chooses' uses drink as their medication while I used the drinker for mine.

I have chosen many different medicines over the years, food, cigarettes, studying, television, books, lots of other people. The list goes on. I couldn't get enough of any of it just like the drinker cant get enough of alcohol.

I recently learned about the 'Empty Ghosts' in Buddhism, where these ghosts with big bellys and tiny mouths eternally search for fullness but cant ever get enough. I'm an empty ghost in remission one day at a time. Im a grateful member.

((((El-Cee))))

Great Share, and I Too Can Relate... But First I must Say I'm also a Recovering Alcoholic that got Sober in Al-Anon ;)

I Do Believe there are Different Al-anoners and that's what makes this Program So Great... There are Some I Can Relate to about anything they are Moving thru, and others, I'm Just Stuck and Confused...

And I Like you Mention have used every Filler known to Man & MEN..lol to fill those Needs, I have Put down Cigarettes, and Alcohol but Still Struggle everyday with Many other "Habits" I have Formed... Some Good Even, and Of Course Some Not So Much.. :/

I have Not been around MIP In a Few Months Now, but I have been Keeping up with My In Town Groups and making my Weekly Meetings, but Like you I Can Slip at Any Moment... The Tools We Learn are Such a Blessing, and After Being Here almost 7 years now, I Can Still Say... I Learn More Every Time I Apply myself Fully to My Program...

Thanks For Sharing...
Friends in Recovery

Great concepts and wisdom LC

I too am an "Empty Ghost" in remission one day at a time. I know that as long as I accept this and use alanon I will be fine.

Wow, El-Cee, great share!
I think that there certainly must be different Al-Anoners.
I cannot imagine my life without AlAnon now, and I see how different I am when I am working my program and when I slide.
On the other hand, my mother-in-law said I can have all her books and that she isn't going to go to meetings anymore because she doesn't need them, as she already knows what's in there.
Not taking her inventory here, but I think the two of us are a prime example of different types of AlAnoners. When I don't take things a day at a time, I get lost.

Al-anon has been a life changer for me  ... like everyone else I cannot imagine not having a daily connect to the steps, prayers HP and MIP.  Like you all  .. I am definitely an "Empty Ghost" in remission.

I have the disease of "more" which means, if I like something, I always want more of it. So that has been a problem in several areas of my life. This is why I am a double here because I've been a codependent relationship addict in addition to having my own issues with substances. I have not relapsed on alcohol and it's been 6 and a half years without a drink, but in that time, I have constantly battled with excessive working out, eating, working too much, applying to too many jobs...If I am having an allergic reaction to something, I will take 4 Benadryl instead of 2 because after all, more is better right? It is something I really struggle with. So I need alanon and AA for balance and spiritual fitness. Without it, I cannot life a life in balance.

It is truly about emotional and spiritual balance in my life.
I feel so much more centered and sure footed since i
started alanon. So much damage was done in my childhood
That i needed undoing in order to have a healthy relationship
With myself and God.

I over eat, work, read and think. I can easily obsess over
Something that is out of my control. I am my own worst enemy
At times of stress.

I will probably always need alanon to keep me in check. I
See people in alanon that are still in their disease. I am a
Caretaker thats what i do for work too :)
