A verbally abuses our mother

My brother constantly verbally abuses my mother. I've talked to her about it a million times. She doesn't deny that he verbally abuses her, but she makes excuses for him like, "it's okay, he's just having a bad day" I wish there was something I could do to stop this.

Aloha Jayda and it's sad that verbal, mental, physical and emotional abuse is a part of this disease and it is.  It is sadder still that enabling and enablers take part in the disease by accepting it.  It is true when the AA literature says that the alcoholic can get to sobriety if they are willing and have the capacity to get honest.  It is also true in Al-Anon when we say that often times we are sicker than the alcoholic because we don't have alcohol to block out reality and we participate wide openly.  There must be face to face Al Anon meeting in or around you town.  Call the hot line and find one and invite your mother with attraction.  This program really works but only if we participate and take and follow thru with suggestions.

Keep coming back (((hugs)))

Hello Jayda,

I am a mom that took abuse from my daughter while her disease was progressing. It bothered my son when he would come home from college and see her personality change.  I felt quite helpless at the time and became a part of the drama and became sick like here while I was in denial. Even my daughter's friends would comment on how she would talk to me. Alot of it was more an attitude problem to begin with. When I finally came out of denial and came to alanon is when I began to focus on me, work my program and gain stength to set up the boundaries to stop this abuse. I think in the beginning I was in shock more than anything at seeing how much my daughter was changing and not being able to identify why? I am sorry your mom is going through this and I hope she can get to an alanon meeting or start reading some literature. cdb

Keep a very close watch on your mother.

That's how my brother started with our mother over a year ago. It took him biting her for her to finally file a petition.
