reasons to drink

I have found this out in my experiences with my A.

Reasons to drink....because you are pissed off...because you had a great day...because you are celebrating...because you are sad...because you and your wife had a fight...because your child was born...because your child is in the hospital...because life is great...because you feel lucky...because you are bored...because you are exhausted...etc etc etc. Anytime anyday anywhere is a good excuse to drink! Oh and my favorite...because you have a hangover!

You forgot the best one ever....

"I only drink on days that end in d-a-y"

Yep, they can come up with a million different reasons, and most of the time, can say them with a straight face!!

And to add a few more:

The guys wanted to go out after work, Football is on!, your kids have a football game, your kids have a baseball game, it was such a hot day out and a cold beer sounded so good, we're camping!, it's noon somewhere in the world, it's Christmas, it's our anniversary, it's Valentines Day, It's New Years Eve, it's my birthday, my old friend that I haven't talked to in forever called and wanted me to meet him after work, I just want to be normal, ALL the guys are going, we got off work early and just wanted to "shoot the shit", the race is on, it's the weekend, and again: All the guys wanted to go out after work!

As far as I'm concerned, you've only scratched the surface. Looking back to the insanity of my active alcoholism, I had a lot more 'reasons' at my disposal. That's how delusional my disease made me. If you are not an alcoholic and have not lived through that hell of self deception, don't waste your time trying to figure out why we do it. It defies all logic.

My personal mind boggler

I needed to relax.

This one has a double twist ... "You should have a drink to relax and relieve stress.". EGADS

Wow - I was just making this list in my head the other day.

Sometimes I just want to shout GET OVER IT!!!!!  Be a human being and face whatever problems or challenges you have to face.  Quit running away!

Okay- sorry- but I feel better now.

But....at the top of the list of reasons to drink is because he/she is an ALCOHOLIC!!! That is the only reason they need. Alcoholics drink. Period. Diva

Diva.....you took the words right out of my mouth.  That is pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

Lou.....I agree with you as well.  Before I became addicted to pain pills, I used to rack my brain trying to understand why my A did what he did.  You are right, it does defy all logic.  Now I see how my own brain lies to me and is constantly trying to deceive me in some way concerning these pills.  It's as if my own mind has turned against me.....that's about the only way I could describe it.  Like a recording  has been turned on, keeps running nonstop, and I can't find the button to turn it off.
