Barbara,

Each groups business meetings are a little different as some groups are more formal than others.  However, as a whole they are done to assure the health of the group.  It is an opportunity to bring issues out regarding the meeting - good and bad.  It is also where the treasurer gives their report of spending for the month.  Sometimes announcements are made.  I encourage all newcomers to attend business meetings as they are a good place to learn about service.

We don't have them very often at my meeting.
You do things like appoint service reps, make any money decisions - money sent to other levels of alanon, buying literature, ads in the paper, whatever. Anything that pertains to the actual physical running of the group - do we need to move the meeting, do we need a new coffeemaker.... We also use our business meetings to talk about any changes we might feel we need to make the meetings - do we want to have step meetings, do we want to have a set schedule for chair, etc etc.
I would assume that a big meeting with a lot of people would have more to talk about. If you are interested in getting involved in service, this is a good place to start.

It's kind of neat, if you have spent any time on committees and boards in your life, to compare. Alanon is not hierarchical - there is no boss, and it really shows in the meetings. We don't vote, at our meetings, just keep talking until we reach a decision that everybody is happy with. It sometimes means that not much gets done, but there is seldom anything that NEEDS to get done, in that sense. What we are here for is recovery, and the way business meetings are held seems to foster that.
