I was the one that set the www.mipchat.net site up, and I'm in the process of tweaking the configuration of that java client -- if anyone has any comments or suggestions try to catch me online (I'm "jmr").
The page there should be considered temporary and is not currently part of the MIP site; eventually www.mipchat.net will either become MIP-branded and maintained by John or will be a redirect back to the existing page where people currently enter chat off the MIP site.
If you are happy with the new java client, feel free to thank me, but remember it's John F. and all the people who watch the room and chair the meetings who deserve the credit for keeping all this working. I am just testing out new tools.
