my son went to war

Hi Alanon Friends,

I said goodbye yesterday to my oldest son who is in the military. He is going into combat for the third time and he is only 22 years old. He knows exactly what he is getting into and it was hard to watch him prepare to go.

We helped him clear out his apartment. I brought his Christmas stocking from home and plugged in some lights. We wanted him to leave knowing that he is loved and that we support him. Needless to say, it was very emotional on base watching the wives with small children saying goodbye knowing that they would be coping alone for a year. Our son has a girlfriend and this was her first time saying goodbye. I have prayed and know that it is time to let his HP watch over him.

My husband and I drove back in separate cars with our son's possessions late last night. My husband has moved out so we returned to separate houses. I didn't want to fall apart in front of my son. I just didn't want to make it more difficult than it was for all of us. So I played my recovery tapes on the long trip back and cried in the dark.

It will be a long year for all of us particularly for our son. I know I will be taking it one day at a time. I thought of all the challenges that I have been faced with in this last year. At times it seems unbearable. I am so thankful that I have the Alanon program and the teachings to have a framework for coping. As my son climbed on the bus, I realized that it was time to let go and let god.

I am grateful for this board to be able to share my story with you. I gain strength from reading your stories. And it helps so much knowing that I am not alone.

Nancy

Glad you are here to share with us.  I just saw my 19 year old off to army boot camp a few weeks ago.  The support I have received here has been wonderful.  So glad you are here with us too.  Keep us posted on how you are doing, okay?  Much love to you.

Wishing you enough, Kis

My son is in the Air Force and is on the Task List for March.  He got married this year, has two step children and they had a baby in August.  His wife has cystic fibrosis and he could get out of being deployed but feels he has to go.  He is in AZ, we are in WA.  They are planning on coming up in January to see all the family, my heart is already torn I can't imagine what you are going through right now because when I think of my son I immediatly push all bad thought out of my brain.  You and your family are in my heart and prayers.

Your post is a wonderful example of how we can work this program in all areas of our lives.  While I have not had this experience myself, my heart aches for all of those I see on t.v. saying goodbye to their loved ones.  I also admire them, their ability to let their loved ones go.  I have always thought it was important that regardless of what I feel about the military conflicts in our society today it is important to support and thank those making the choice and sacrifice to help keep our country free.  So Nancy to you I say thank you for giving your son the wings to fly and to your son thank you for your service and commitment to keep us free.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to watch a son go off to war. The feelings must be a combination of sadness, fear, pride and whatever else. You should be so proud to have raised him to be a good man and do what is asked of him.

I agree with what others have said. No matter what I feel about the war, I have nothing but respect for the people who are over there serving this country. They are in my prayers each night.

I pray that you have peace and that your son is safe and returns home to you safely.

                                         Love Jeannie

(((((((((((((Nancy))))))))))))),

To you and all the families here who have loved ones in the military, from the bottom of my heart a great big THANK YOU. Words will never express how grateful I am for all the sacrifices your families and others make for our nation.

I will keep all military families in my prayers. May your loved ones return safe and sound. May the families find strength and peace especially this time of years. We will always be here for you.

Love and blessings to all.

Live strong,
Karilynn
