Is either less important than the other? I feel that letting people know that youre taking care of your physical self is more accepted than taking are of your emotional self. How can we make that other part just as important?

Barbara,

What matters is what's important to us.  If we feel working on our emotional as well as our physical well being is important, than therefore it is.  We don't need others to agree or approve.

IMO....  taking care of ourselves emotionally is AT LEAST as important as taking care of ourselves physically....  Well I would agree that 'some people' don't accept the validity of our need to take care of our emotional well being - I would have three thoughts on that:

1. I think that is rapidly changing, and most healthy people are recognizing the dual need (or even a third - spiritual)

2. I don't choose to associate much with those who don't think I have the right to be healthy, in every respect of the word...

3. What you think of me is none of my business (and I apply that to all of the above..... if I feel that I need to take care of myself emotionally, why would or should I really care what 'others' think?)

Just my two bits...

Tom

Hello Barbara,

Just a different perspective here from my own experience. I have taken care of my emotional health for over 10 years after my nervous breakdown. My physical has suffered. Plus our emotional health can make us physically ill too. I think what it comes down to is balancing our life just like everything else. Like the alanon HALT saying, H,,,hungry,,,,A angry,,,,L,,,lonely and T,,,,tired.....when these are not in balance it is harder for us to cope or we slip in our program. Balance for me is the key. cdb :)
