PAPD?

Hi,

I was helping my daughter study and we got to talking. She takes advanced Psycology in school and she had questioned me. I don't know the answer. I told her it was something to either question her teacher about or ask her councilor about.

She was reading about Passive aggressive personality disorder and said it sounds a lot like Daddy, except for the drinking. We where looking over the list and I have to agree a lot of the behaviors sound like it.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it, or knows if it is common in an alcoholic or do hte two just have very similar traits.

                      Thanks

                   Jeannie

Hi , alcoholism has many traits none of them pretty. Alcohol does take the man and leaves someone u don't know behind. until the alcohol is removed from the system it would be diff to pin point any other problems, (just my opinion)  A's run hot and cold daily one min it's ok they leave the room and wham things go crazy again. husb did it for yrs. Which leaves us shaking our heads in confusion.

for confusion sake assume that u are living with a good ole garden variety alcoholic, period. Just keep the focus on yourself and leave him to God. He has a Higher Power too I always for got that  and He will take your husb where he needs to go.

Well...interesting question.   The typical alcoholic can be Jeckyll/Hyde on alcohol.   Remove the alcohol they CAN have underlying conditions.    Depression, ADHD, personality disorders, multiple personality disorders, bipolar depression.    But nothing can be correctly diagnosed until the alcohol is removed and the alcoholic seeks help and correct diagnosis for anything underlying.   My spouse has ADD/ADHD.   Will he get help for it?  Not yet.

Hello jeannie,

I am very familiar with this disorder. It is a disorder that is in the diagnostic manual for psychiatrists/MDs. They use it the same as the diagnosis with depression, bi-polar (disorder that use to be manic depression), suicidal ideation, post traumatic syndrome, etc. etc.

Like other health issues, for insurance reasons and treatment options, there needs to be a diagnosis. The diagnosis is just a list of characteristics where if the individual fits into a certain amount of criteria then they can technically be diagnosed as such. They actually have behaviors listed and numbered. It is easy to look up. Just do a search on Personality Disorder and then the individual ones under that category will show up. You can go to a site like Mayo Clinic or a medical search engine.

People with mental disorders can have more than one diagnosis and many times do. There are also different types of depressions for the doctors to diagnose a patient. Remember that I am writing this from my memory and learnings but so far it seems pretty accurate. cdb :)

Hello again,

PS,,,,from talking to doctors about my alcoholic daughter, the drinking first needs to stop before certain type of diagnosis in the mental health category can occur. I would think though that if they hear voices all the time etc. this would be easier to diagnose as schizophrania even though they drink.  So, it seems that the alcoholism would indeed mimic different mental health disorders but not all. Although, my daughter is diagnosed as dual disorder meaning she is an alcoholic/drug addict as well as depressed. For more specific mental health diagnosis there probably needs to be no drinking involved. The period of time involved, I do not know. I have often wondered if my daughter has something else going on because when she drinks her behavior gets very bizaare and the treaters and doctors have wondered this too. This is why the doctors may not be able to pick up and family mental health issues at this time. Oh and one more thing.......depending on the textbook your daughter is using, depends on the information she needs to know for her tests. :) cdb

Thanks,

The information in her text was all she needs for her homework. My daughter and I have a lot in common as we both tend to research things to death when they get out attention.

I know no matter what the drinking has to be dealt with before anything else, but I had nevr seen anything so similar to him before and it never occured to me that there could be other things besides the drinking.

Katie and I are like my Dad, we always kid that between the three of us there is tons of useless information, but we do great at Trivia pursuit. The library is one of our favorite places and we can spend hours searching the Internet to get answers only to come up with more questions on other topics.

                  Thanks

              Love Jeannie

Jeannie,

Your daughter, you and I have this same thing in common. :)  I love researching and looking up information. I will even see a television show or movie and research stuff for fun. I only wish I could still be working or teaching. Maybe in the future :).

It is so great that you can share with your daughter! It is just one more thing that proves what a great mom you are! :) (((((()))))) hugs,,,cdb

Since you all are talking about psychological disorders, I figured I'd just throw another resource in here..... A book titled Victory Over The Darkness, A Battle For The Mind, by Neil Anderson.   All I can say it was after reading this book I realized what my entire life had been about AND in turn started making an effort to learn so much more about how to not live that same life I lived prior to reading this book.  Having the insight and understanding offered in this book finally allowed me to have a greater understanding of what I had lived my entire life and the direction I needed to seek to overcome so many negative and tragic aspects of it.
