Hello.  I am going to try to go to my first meeting today...I was wondering if the meetings are like AA meetings and what goes on exactly?  Is there a speaker or does everyone speak?  Thank you for your help..

Also...it shows like this :   Thursday  - B7:30 and right underneath the 7:30 it says 8:00??? What tiem does it really start? Thank you.confused.gif

Every meeting is a little different. Some meetings are speaker meetings, some are open discussions, etc. In my home group, we open with the serenity prayer and the leader reads a group-approved script about Al-Anon and how the meeting runs.  We read the 12 steps and the 12 tradtions.  The topic depends of the week of the month: step, tradition, slogan or topic (leader's choice). The leader shares on the topic and then opens it up for others to share. We go either clockwise or counter-clockwise (leader's choice) and everyone is free to pass. There is no cross-talk and on the last Friday night of the month, we go out for coffee at Starbucks afterwards for the proverbial "meeting after the meeting."  smile  We close our meetings with the Our Father.

Another meeting that I used to attend used the index in Courage to Change and at each meeting they just went to the next topic in the index.  As they went around the room, folks were free to read one of the related readings (or not) and share on the topic (or anything they wanted to or nothing at all).

I don't know what the time listing means.  I would call your local information center (or the number listed on your local website) to find out.  If you get there a few minutes early, I would encourage you to ask someone who looks like a regular about how the meeting works--it's a good excuse to say "hi" and introduce yourself if the group does not have a greeter.

I hope you have a wonderful experience.  But if not, please go to another meeting and try it out.  You may need to go to a few different meetings before you find the one that is the best fit for you.

Have a great day!!  smile

SLS is right on the mark here.  Do not give up if you are not comfortable at your meeting.  Go to another...and another.  You'll find a group that fits; hopefully the first one you attend.  Good luck.  I send you all best wishes,

Diva

Hello Lili,

I am guessing that the B that shows before the 7:30 means its a Beginners Meeting and a regular meeting starts at 8.

It sounds like these meetings are loosely Christian based... what if you're not Christian? I am, but my boyfriend is Buddhist (for the moment, anyway, haha).
