I will be getting fired this week

My boss gave me 2 weeks to schedule appointments for a salesperson in the office. I will not receive any type of commission. I told him that I did not feel this was fair and not my responsibility since sales people do their own cold calling. Right now I am being cornered by both the boss and the sales guy. My boss wants me to run around the office and take care of everyone's problems. I have my own job to do. There is no reasoning with him. He was talking to me about a contract with one of our major accounts and I asked him if he could e-mail me the details. He refused. I am trying to just do my job to the best of my ability. One of the women in the office told me that I dress too nice and that life is about giving and I should wear clothes from Walmart. I keep thinking to myself that this cannot be really happening. My choices are limited at the moment. I cannot afford to lose my job, yet I can't afford not to stand up for myself. HELP!

You said "I can't afford not to stand up for myself." ... sounds like a reasonable plan. Has he ever said, if you take up for yourself just one more time, I'm gonna...

I would never expect a fellow employee to go over the top, but letting a boss know you are being overloaded is probably expected. - I expect it anyway.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do either way. Respectful communication of boundries is appropriate in business too if needed. I relayed a reasonable boundry by blowing up at a boss one time... I certainly don't recommend that. (I didn't get fired though)

Just my humble thoughts.

Good luck.

Take care of you!

He doesn't believe anything anyone tells him. The person before me told him it was too much to handle and he thought they were being ridiculous. He lives in his own world and acts if other people's needs don't exist. As far as the cold colling problem, I confronted him about this. He scheduled a meeting. No one showed up at the meeting, not even him. The air conditioner in my office blows warm air. He walked in and I told him. He said that it felt fine to him. A couple hours later someone else walked in and said it was hot. I have deadlines to meet and need his approval before the project can be sent. He comes up with all kinds of excuses why he hasn't seen the project. What am I supposed to do? I feel like he is playing games.

You have my sympathy, some bosses can be a right pain in the A, I know I have to start a contract with one half way through July for six weeks, and boy will he put me through my paces, I worked in unworkable conditions last summer but like you need the dough, as for the one who tells you that you dress too nice... her opinion of you is none of your business, please continue to take good care of yourself, I would be put everything into email with him, as these type of confrontations are deeply distressing for me, and the rule at corporate level is too print these emails of and put them in an action folder, then he cannot accuse you of being incompetent or non compliant, I would try to be pleasant not people pleasing and extra professional in the email, then at least if and when you decide to move on, your self esteem has not been damaged. I did not envisage working with my boss again, and perhaps I will regret it but I feel I have established some tools working the alanon programme and hope he will not be able to press too many buttons, one of his favourite was ringing at a minute to five just to constantly make sure I had not gone home early or like you unreasonable requests,

I'm not sure what your position is there, but if you're an assistant of some type then in alot of companies you may be expected to do anything and everything. If it's a large business, then I'd talk to someone in corporate about what the company policies are on this before you test them on the salesperson issue - if it's a small business, check your agreement or any manual you were given upon hire. That clothing comment was SO rediculous and totally uncalled for, LOL - I would laugh if someone said something like that to me, BESIDES Walmart is actually starting to keep up with the nice work clothing trends so you can't really tell the difference on some of their brands - you are doing nothing wrong as long as you look professional that's all that matters. On the email thing - the one thing I always try to do is have a pad and pen with me so that I can write down what they're saying then and there. I also always keep a checklist of projects and little things I need to do in front of me. Once you're read-up on company policies and your official duties, talk to them calmly about all of the issues, if they refuse to listen and try to understand where you're coming from then I'd do my best to keep them satisfied for now, meanwhile look for something better with a more positive environment.
