So new question...

Why is American society so anti-drug when it comes to pain pills, heroin, pot, coke, etc...but so pro drug when it comes to tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, viagra, prozac...????  Is this some leftover from our puritain forefathers?  Seems odd to me that of equally harmful drugs that some would be legal and others not.  Why can't the average person see and understand this?

I think its bass ackwards myself... we are one of the only countries that has a huge problem with alcohol and drug addiction.  Other countries that don't have a legal drinking age or have legalized marijuana do not have the staggering stats of addicted people as American's.  Maybe its reverse psychology, people tend to do what they are not allowed to do, makes them feel like their grown up or getting away with something.  In other countries there appears to be a healthy respect for alcohol not sure about marijuana usage, but the amount of smoke bars in the U.K. allows people to use it in a more controlled environment.  Again, marijuana has been proven to help those patients with cancer and glaucoma and is medically been regulated for them.  What would happen if the U.S. legalized this?  Don't think our generation or the next would have any healthier approach in using but possibly our children's children.

Another interesting topic,
Peace,
Twinmom~

You might want to google "victimless crime" or being a social worker you're probably familiar with the term. I can't figure it out, but, I suppose if these things were legal and could be bought over the counter, you would see people purchasing vicodin at the grocery store too.

Thanks for this post. I agree with twinmom2 and would also add that though I'm not an American I feel, looking at it from the outside, that legality and acceptance has a lot more to do with money and power than it does the health of citizens.

That's my take on it.  Tobacco and alcohol being legal while pot is not, is a clear example of "who got there first".  It's power and money, pretty much.  Whether pot is a 'gateway' drug or not, it hasn't been shown to cause the damage of the other two, and has some limited medicinal uses.  It makes no sense, though I have no personal involvement.  We had a lady dying of a brain tumor who took those Marinol pills an hour before a meal and was able to eat and keep up her strength, but couldn't eat enough otherwise.

Simple. The big drug companies are not lining their pockets with the profits from illegal drugs.   They hawk the legal ones on tv, in magazines...Big business, drugs, reaping billions in profits.

It has little to do with what is legal and what is not, more to do with a society that encourages buying/consuming a product to fix your life. Most of us have become addicts to some form of instant gratification and thinking that if we drink the best coffee, or wear the right clothes then we will have a great life. Better to focus on the things that matter, like prayer, spirituality and a realationship with our HP.

In a related note - the gov't is raising taxes on cigarettes to pay for schooling - if we become dependant on those taxes where is the incentive to discourage smoking?
