Book Suggestions?

Hi again.

I am going to try to make it to some meetings, but not sure how that is going to fit in with my busy schedule. There are no meetings near my house at a time that would work very good. There is one about 15 mins from work, so i might try to hit a lunch meeting. Anyway, I thought maybe starting with a book and posting here and reading may help if i can't make meetings.

I see lots of books for Al-Anon, what whould be your suggestion as the first one to read if I am just getting familiar with the program?

Thank You,

~Harmony

The BigBook, and or  one that explains the steps and traditions.

When you go to a meeting they should bring books and pamphlets for you to purchase and pamphlets are free.

I go to used book stores and drag them home. My favorite book is,"Getting Them Sober." it talked to me big time...love,debilyn

courage to change
one day at a time

Welcome to Mip...biggrin

Good books..hmmm

"Paths to recovery" explains steps and traditions.

"From survival to recovery" (shares from families of alcoholics)  Good if you grew up in a family with Alcoholics...

"The lois wilson story...When love is not enough" (good for easy reading)..wink

Hope this helps you..

Yours in recovery

My favorite is "How Al-Anon works for the Family & Friends of Alcoholics".

This book gives a lot of information. An overview of the Steps & Traditions, information on detachment, love, etc., plus the back portion of the book has personal stories from fellow Al-Anon members.

Also, the daily devotionals - "Courage to Change" & "One Day at a Time in Al-Anon" are great starters too.

Wishing you peace,
Rita

Hi Harmony,

My favorite is also "How Al-Anon Works...."

It covers all bases as far as Al-Anon, and there are great stories in the back. I think this is a great place to start. I guess it would be considered Al-Anon's "Big Book", but the Big Book for AA is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature.

The daily readers are great (ODAT, Courage to Change, Hope for Today). I make sure I start every day with them.

"In All Our Affairs" has really great stories for crises situations.

Hope that helps.
:)

((((((((Harmony))))))),

I have several meditation books that help keep me on my path to recovery:
More on the Language of Letting Go by Melodie Beattie as well as The Promise of a New Day by Karen Case & Martha Vanceburg.

Love and blessings to you and your family.

Live strong,
Karilynn & Pipers Kitty smile

Harmony,

In the beginning,

small blue book called One Day At a Time Alanon (daily reader) and Courage to Change in Alanon (daily reader) were about all I could manage as I began the process of healing.

Hope this helps,
Maria

Thank you for the replies everyone. I had a great discussion with my husband last night about all of this and how I am going to try to start attending al-anon and about this board. I think a lot of my stuggles are from my childhood and then now I am married to an A. I don't want to overwhelm myself with too much information so I just ordered "From survival to recovery" to start with.

Have a great memorial weekend everyone!

~Harmony
