Need Help Discerning Conversation


My boss recently told me that the account I was assigned to reported that they were very happy with me. I was very happy to hear this news. My boss said, It has nothing to do with you. It's only because different people like different people". I wasn't sure how to take this comment. I could understand what he was saying, but at the same time it felt like a putdown. Perhaps I am being too sensitive. Sometimes I don't know if I should feel sensitive or let things roll off my back. I have read that no one can make you feel anything and that you are responsible for your own feelings. I cannot make any sense out of this issue. Does anyone have any guidance on this? Thank you.

Being the way I am... (take that for what it's worth, LOL) He probably wouldn't say anything if he didn't think it was a good reflection on the company (which includes you) or himself. So with that in mind, he probably just stated something poorly.

Is that true? How the heck do I know, but I have seen worse. I once was leading a department meeting in front of about 80 employees, and asked another manager to give an update on a program that had just finished and gone really well. They rattled off several names of people involved in the project and to cover themselves said something like .... " and of course there were many others who worked on the project which is why we had to bill so much for it."

I had no less than 10 people ask if they were just bloating the cost of the project and adding no value....

Customer liked you... that says a lot about your ability to deliver for your client. Well done! Clients don't say a word about us when we are average. ;)

When people put me down like that, I like to feel it's some kind of jealousy. The don't have a certain gift I have......

Also  some people in management NEED to be number one all the time. As I have found, It's the indians who deserve the comments,the credit, and not always the Big Chief.....

Well, which choice would leave you happier?  If being sensitive would leave you with hurt feelings and resentments, and letting it roll off your back would leave you feeling fine, I know which one I would pick....

I tend to assume that people mean well, unless there is an obvious, unable-to-be-misunderstood insult.  Less wear and tear on the nerves all around.  You may miss out on the odd chance to be offended, by not taking offense when in fact it was meant, but, really, so what?

Ya know, I have found that some people just can't give others a compliment. It is not within them to do this. So if I were you, I would take the compliment as if it were from the customer and the boss was just passing it on. Hold you head up high. You are awesome and your customer acknowledged that. And in doing that, it forced your boss to acknowledge it too even though he/she was reluctant to do it. You go girl.
