The River

Lin0606's post got me to thinking how so many songs (if dissected have such deeper meaning...and maybe we can even find some al-anon philosophy in some, if we have our minds in the right place. Thanks Lin0606, for going to the garage sale!

I am a substitute teacher and an english teacher wanted her 6th grade class to write their thoughts on this Garth Brooks song....I'm eager to see their responses!)

The River

You know a dream is like a river (Life)
Ever changing as it flows (you can't live life with out change)
And the dreamer's just a vessel (this body we possess is our vessel)
That must follow where it goes (the river, a.k.a. life, takes us there)
Trying to learn from what's behind you, (Live and let live, Let Go and let God, Easy Does it)
Never knowing what's in store (Faith)
Makes each day a constant battle (One Day at a Time)
Just to stay between the shores. (Life's struggles)
But I will sail my vessel (Live life to the fullest)
'til the river runs dry. (Don't ever quit on yourself)
Like a bird upon the wind (fly in faith)
These waters are my sky. (reach for your dreams)
I'll never reach my destination (negative thinking)
If I never try. ("I will never give up, never give up, never give up...no, not I." quote from Peter Pan?)
So I will sail my vessel (Old Man and the Sea)
'til the river runs dry. ("somtimes, where God shuts a door, Maria, he opens a window"-Sound of Music)
Many times we stand aside; (apathy)
Let the water slip away, (missed opportunities)
Do what we put off 'til tomorrow (procrastination)
It has now become today. (How'd that happen? Denial)
So don't you sit upon the shoreline (Detach to a fault)
And say you're satisfied. (Lie to oneself)
Choose to chance the rapids (find the wildest ride at the theme park nearest you!)
And dare to dance that tide. (how's the song go... if' i'd never dared to dance?)
There's bound to be rough waters (the song, Shipwrieck of the Edmond Fitzgarald)
And I know I'll take some falls ("Many things about tommorrow I don't seem to understand, but I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand" Ira Stanphill, 1950 hymn)
With the good Lord as my captain (God as we understand him)
I can make it through them all. (Face it and Recover)

(Keep the main thing the main thing, and the main thing is?
For me......God, as I understand him.)

If you have a song or a line from a song that means something to you, I'd love to hear it. Music is solice for the soul.

That is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Have you ever noticed that your favorite songs like never get played and the ones that you liked like get played until you hate them and the songs that already grate on your nerves don't stop getting played?
