Stupd Question

I keep reading posts about having a sponsor and the 12 steps--is this true for members of Al-Anon as well as AA?  I'm confused...do I need a sponsor if I'm not an alcoholic?

Hi eyeteach

Welcome to MIP!  AA offers sponsers right away at open meetings to help keep the newly sobered, sober and accountable.  In Alanon a person doesn't have to have a sponser but it is recommended to have one to help with working the twelve steps.  It took me a long time to find the right person to ask to be my sponser, but once I found one my program has flourished.  It feels more meaningful and its great to be able to share those experiences with someone who values this program like I do.  Hope that helps some.

Peace,
Twinmom~

((((((((Welcome))))))))
You're in the right place (from your other post).
In my opinion there are no stupid questions ...
Re sponsors ... it has been my experience and how I read the al anon literature is that there is no one way to 'do' the al anon program.  Each one of us comes from different circumstances, and you know best what your situation is.  With that said, I guess I've been told a bit different from Twinmom, cause I've consistently been told that getting a sponsor is part of the al anon program.  Still, there is no one out there checking on that, it is up to you when, if and/or who to get as a sponsor.  It was my experience too that it took me a while to find a sponsor who was a good fit for me, but once I did, my program and other aspects of my life began to improve significantly.  There is an al anon pamphlet on sponsorship that you might find at a face to face meeting local to where you live.
I'm glad you are here.  Keep coming back.

A sponsor is like a guide and friend ,that someone special who knows all there is to know about you .   and loves u anyway . A sponsor is invaluable for me and my recovery when i don't undersand something she explains from her own experiences .   Go to meetings listen for someone u can relate too ,or someone who has what u want for me it was the smile the one who kept commin back regardless of what was going on in her life.  good luck  Louise

This is just my experience. Once my friends kinda got tired of listening to my stories of my ah I ran out of places to vent. So I found my outlet in church. You can try journaling. You can write letters to the A in your life but never send them. It will still help. Sorry if I'm not much help. Good luck. ^i^
