Has anyone heard of "Celebrate Recovery"?

Hello, I am new to this forum and to Al-Anon. I have started a program called "Celebrate Recovery" at a local church...has any one here heard of this program? If so...what are your thoughts?

Thanks TA

(((((((TexasAngel))))))),

Can't say that I have of that either.  But any program that works for you, and celebrates recovery is good enough for me.  So if it works for you, GO FOR IT!  I have found a program that is for families of addicts.  It's more like a support group.  So between Alanon and AA and that group, it seems to have done the trick.

Love and blessings to you and your family.

Live strong,
Karilynn & Pipers Kitty

Hi Texas,

I have heard of it.  Havent attended any meetings however.  The program is similiar to an AA/Al-Anon program...they have condensced the 12 steps into 8...and in a nut shell, do away with the term Higher Power and replace that with God.

Like Karilynn says, if it works for you go for it!

I would suggest going to that and an Al-anon meeting and see which one seems to suit you better.

Yours in Recovery,

David

I have heard of it and I went to a couple of meetings.  It was nice.  The church I attend started one, but it just didn't get off the ground well.  It was a very small group--which isn't a bad thing, but it's in a small town and I think people had a hard time being so honest about what was going on in their lives b/c then others might find out.  I think it is a good program, but I personally feel more comfortable with al-non.  I think I would have enjoyed that program more if I felt there were more who understood where I was coming from.  I hope you found a great group of people with your group b/c I'm sure it can be a great thing!!

wanted to say welcome to mip

only know what David said about that program - but for me, recovery is about trusting in a power greater than ourselves to lead us in a healthier way of life.  Here in Louisiana, there are tons of different was to make gumbo - dry roux, store bought roux, homemade roux, gumbo w/ okra, gumbo w/o okra, spicy gumbo, really, really spicy gumbo, & tons of others - but no matter what you still have gumbo.

So if MIP, Al-Anon, Celebrate Recovery, or any other support program helps you recover from the way that the diseases of alcoholism & addiction have affected your life - then bottom line, you get recovery.  Recovery.  Isn't that our ultimate goal?

Glad you are here - don't give up before the miracles happen in you - you deserve them.

Rita

I just "googled" it, as I hadn't heard of it, but it sounds similar to some other offshoots of Al-Anon, AA, etc...  I softly agree with the others - that "whatever works for you"....  I guess my one concern and awareness going in is that some "church-based" programs, however well intentioned, may really get into what one "should and shouldn't" do, in the eyes of God.
Sometimes the message is almost too simplistic, for the disease of addictions, in my opinion.  The Bible is full of references as to how we should live our lives, treat our spouses, etc., and depending on the leaders and direction given in the specific groups, my concern would be that it could be a course built on "shame" and "should", as opposed to growth and recovery, per se.

My best advice would be to go into anything - whether that is 'Celebrate Recovery' or 'Al-Anon' or whatever - with eyes wide open.  I like the idea of "trying both", and seeing which one fits best for you.

Take care
Tom

Tom--
I had a little giggle when you said "Sometimes the message is almost too simplistic, for the disease of addictions"--my ah says "go and sin no more" just doesn't work for him.  (Anyway, that just reminded me of that).

hi,   i've heard of Celebrate Recovery and I have their book.   For me, I have no problem with it if it's worked in conjunction with Alanon being the primary program.   My reason for this is that Alanon and AA were around a long time before these off-shoots and they have a very firm foundation.

Another things I like about Alanon  is that  anyone  can chair  a meeting.   Most of the off-shoot groups that I know about require a "leader."     I

In Alanon, there is no "trained leader" so, therefore, we are all on an equal basis.   I also believe that if you want to remain anonymous, it's best to go to Alanon.

These are just my opinions and what works for me.   I have read many books that aren't conference approved and have gotten much help as well as attending other groups dealing with co-dependence.

Many hugs to you.
