gentle reminder re: Copyrighting

When I read:

All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in or introduced into a retrieval system, or transmitted, in any form, or by any means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise), without the prior permission of the publisher.

It is my understanding that this not only applies to CAL (Conference Approved Literature) but anything that states it is copyrighted (protected by laws) and we (MIP) could be held liable for duplicating it here on this site.

It is out of respect of the publisher, the future of this site that all who find experience, strength and hope here and the ones who may find their way here in the future may be able to do so.

This is why I find it important to obey such laws and guidelines.

If I wish to share say a quote or a few sentences (which is all that is allowed) I will state the source from which I found it. Anything more would be considered copyright infringement.

Just as it reads up top of this page:

Wishes in recovery,

Just wanted to add that certain articles from the Forum Magazine have a note attached that says they allow online copying, if the source is credited. So, sometimes it's all right, but you need to check, and do it right.

Thanks, Tea.

Copyrighting is a very fuzzy topic from what I know.

Under that copyright statement, I would not ever write something without citing the source, if I knew the source.

I think sharing in chat or meetings and quoting literature requires the same courtesy.

Sharing a quote online, however, is much like talking aloud in a meeting.     Referring to specific literature still requires the courtesy of acknowledging the source.

In my opinion it would be unethical and unlawful to insert copyrighted material into , say, your personal website or such.

Just some thoughts, and I ain't no lawyer.   I have seen umpteen discussions of copyright on other sites, and yes it is quite fuzzy at times.

Some questions and answers from wso's website (www.al-anon.org):

In sharing on-line can I quote one or two lines from my favorite book to emphasize my sharing?

On-line meetings can obtain annual licensing to use brief quotes from CAL at their meetings; contact the WSO for information. This licensing by the meeting is necessary in order for CAL to be quoted by members. Please click here to acquire the form.

Can I reprint any CAL on the Internet?

The World Service Office does not permit Conference Approved Literature (CAL) to be duplicated on Web sites. Registered on-line meetings can obtain permission (renewed annually) to use brief excerpts from CAL in their meetings.

Click here to see a list of Al-Anon service tools that can be posted on-line without the written permission.

What about sharings from The Forum?

Selected sharings from Al-Anon’s monthly magazine are featured on your WSO World Wide Web page. These may be downloaded and shared with others. Only articles in The Forum that are followed by these words can be downloaded and shared: Feel free to duplicate this article on the Internet with the following credit line: Reprinted with permission of The Forum, Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., Virginia Beach, VA.

Any member can go to this site and find this information (and so much more). It is listed under Publications and then the shop on-line tab. After clicking on shop on-line, scroll down to where it talks about guidelines and open letters, click the link there, it will take you to a members page and ask for your password, which is the name of your group with afg after it.

The wealth of information there is amazing and can clear up a lot of questions people have about what is allowed and how things work and run.

Luv, Kis
