Shushi

Ok all have to ask. LOL, who has tried shushi, I have never tried it but part of my recovery is trying new things. So, I guess I agree to go to do shushi tonight with my friends. I recently started eatting fish. Fished for them for years but never really ate any fish. So figured I will try it. But wanted to know how many of you have tried it and liked it.

Do,
Just got back from vacation in Japan. I can eat sushi if the fish is cooked. I cannot even taste any of the raw fish though. They were eating something called "sashi" which I believe was raw shrimp....YUK!

ok I thought sushi was fresh uncooked fish?? geez what we can learn at alanon...

well fresh uncooked fish should not really have a taste. IF it did it would not be fresh, it would be a bit rotten like tender meat.

there now you learned that, "AGED" meat is hung a bit to rot.

gross? love, debilyn who's daddy and mother were in the meat business and we all are basically vegies....

Well seaweed is very very healthy with all kinds of  vitamins and trace elements in it.  I like the California roll. Unfortunately I can't eat too much sushi because I am allergic to shell fish.  I do eat the vegetarian stuff. I have to be super careful around the allergy so I tend not to go to sushi bars. I have heard great great things about certain sushi restaurants though. They also have a very very high potency alcoholic drink that goes with it.  Be aware it is very high alcohol content.  They also have tea.... The tempura stuff is good though. Deep fried in batter and tasty!

Dear Do,

My whole family loves sushi. Even the kids!!! As mentioned already, fresh sushi has no odor or taste to speak of. But you can spice it up with some wasabi mustard (green mustard) or ginger.  The food here is has a heavy Oriental flavor so there are shushi and shashimi bars all over the place.

Frankly I was turned off by the typical "American" fish. (Flounder, salmon, cod and so on). But having access to really good fish is a treat.

You can learn a lot more about the different kinds of shushi at the following site:-

http://gojapan.about.com/cs/sushilinks1/a/sushi1.htm

I can honestly say the only shushi that I don't care for are the ones containing fish roe. (Too crunchy for me LOL But should be fine if you like caviar).

Relax and enjoy. If your not into fish go for the vegitarian stuff.

Have fun. Love & God Bless

Aloha DO...and do have sushi.  It is food, healthy, varied and fun or course check out for stuff you may be alergic to cause there are many different types of shushi.  Sashimi is raw fish.  Any raw fish sliced thinly to very thinly and layed out on a platter with varied dip types can be sashimi.  Raw fish especially salt water fish, have a flavor and and oil content.  You can find out what you like and then go make sashimi.  I love to dip the filleted fish in a mixture of soy sauce and hot mustard about half and half.  Its great and I don't have sinus problems probably because this will clear my sinuses right out.

Most sushi is rice, either sticky or not sticky flavored with a sweet vinegar, tightly wrapped in side of or outside of a thin dried wafer of dark seaweed called Nori.  Wrapped in and around can be fish, fish eggs, clams, crab, all kinds of vegetables (most always raw).  There are so many different types of sushi with more coming that you can return forever and probably never get it all.  The flavors are outstanding and this is good stuff for people who like to eat for taste above health.  It is not cheap so take an open mind before an open wallet unless it is not a factor for you.  Ask for the menu and then an explanation if you can't understand either the explanation or the picture.  (Some include pictures!!)

My eldest an alcoholic addict learned to make sushi from going to sushi bars, eating lots, getting loaded and still remembering how he was told to make sushi.  He hasn't drank or used for years (as I am aware but its his life not mine) and still makes sushi.  At one time that was the only way he and his family survived the hard times.  He made it and they sold it to employees around town.   He had a huge clientel.  He still makes it and calls up Dad and Mom and we go feast!!  Happy he ain't drinking and using and happier still he didn't wipe out all that good sushi education while he was at it.

Go get some sushi and report back. ((((((hugs))))))

Thanks all for the imput. All I knew about this was that it was raw fish. Didn't realized how much there really was to Sushi. I am really nervous but it is a step in the right direction for me. I am learning to trust. Trust people again. For me this has been a difficult road even harder to trust people I don't know very well and open up. The old me would have found an excuse not to go tonight. I know my HP has my back even after they mentioned squid and octopus to me LOL. They are treating me. So I guess I am at there mercy in away. The new me just confirmed the plans with them. I will give you the offical sushi report either later tonight or tomorrow. LOL

Love! Love! Love! It rules!  Best advice is to start with things like salmon, tuna, crab, California roles, etc.  Don't do anything too exotic such as eel and octopus.

I love trying new things.  I've always had an exotic palate, even as a kid.  My great aunt ran a natural food, vitamin and gourmet shop 40 years ago when this type of cuisine was brand new.  Sushi? Never heard of it. Multi-vitamins? Seaweed?  Yeah right. She was ahead of her time.

The trick to trying anything new is to take it slow, and start with the easier things. I had this rule too when I was introducing people to opera.  The one thing you don't want to do is to give them Wagner to listen too!  You take them to an opera in which they recognise the music (Bugs Bunny anyone?) and in English.  Nothing heavy, nothing intimidating.  Once you get their foot in the door you can go from there.

Have a ball! Bon Appettit!

WOW Ok fun experiance. There was 6 of us and they put us in this little room we had to take off our shoes. Loved the table but I thought you had to sit with your legs indian style but there was a whole cut out in the floor to put you feet in hidden under the table. Ok they were very kind to me no weird foods. I got to try first the meeshu (not sure how to spell it) soup. It had spinach, tofu, green onions I liked it first time on the tofu. Then we had california rolls tried these next, Salmon shell rolls I think is what they called it. This was cruchy but I liked the fact it was a different then the other one. I tried the it with the soy and the green stuff (forgot the name of it). But I liked this better with just the green stuff not mixed with the soy sauce. Over all it was a very fun experiance. Now the people I was with got the last laugh on me. They forgot to tell me not to chew the ginger when I wanted to try it. Guess I made a great face. LOL. Thanks all for you imput yesterday it helped give me strength not to be so nervous in trying new experiance. But thanks HP for showing me I am strong enough to try.

Glad you had a great time.  Miso soup is really delicious and very simple to prepare.  The green stuff is wasabi.  I have a wasabi mustard that I spread on chicken. Yum!  Can't live without the pickeld ginger.  But it does have a kick!  Trying a new cuisine can be so much fun.  Good for you.  What's next? Skydiving?
