is this enabling?

alcoholic is my kids' dad.

he skipped his weekend visitation twice because he was too drunk .  i was always so worried he'd be hungover when he picked up the kids.  i cancelled his weekend visits.

i made it short so that i didn't add my own opinion in.

Seems a good idea to me. I certainly would not let my chilfren go for a week-end with a father who could not stay sober! Enabling? No. Being cautious and loving toward your kids? Yes.

Now, if he has court-ordered visitation rights, then you have to go through the proper legal channels to get them cancelled.

With great caring, Diva

In short, I believe you did the right thing.  Your kids' welfare comes first!

It sounds to me as though you are trying to set appropriate boundaries--not enabling.

One word of caution, until you modify your court-ordered visitation schedule (whatever that might be) he is entitled to the visitation provided.  If you believe that the current schedule is not in the children's best interests you should have the court modifiy it.  Otherwise, you could be opening yourself up to a claim that you are interfering with his visitation rights and that could open up an entirely different can of worms and you could conceivably become the bad guy.

Good luck!!

shamama,

I think you did the right thing. You have to protect your children. I would have done the same...
