The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
Yup...it was if my soul were rubbed raw with the twisted drinking garbage and sitting through my first al-anon meeting felt like a salve to said soul.
I bought three books as soon as I walked into the meeting;'Hope for Today,Courage for Today and One day at a time'. I stuffed them into my purse and took a seat. The leaders of the group were some genuinely calm appearing women who seemed at ease. A natural ease that I welcomed. It's an ease that I hope to embrace and attain sometime down the road for myself. I listened to the parents and spouses of other A-s and mentioned my wish to stop the lecturing,the focusing on HIS problems and an eager wish to work.
It's more of an introductory al-anon meeting but I got my paws on a directory and found a couple more close locations that I can't wait to attend.
Whew.
Every time I was tempted to fall into my old habits (making remarks to how 'tired' he sounds,what is the use for meds if he's still drinking...my sweet LORD I can't wait until I work on that) I opened a book. They are all books meant for daily words of encouragement and wisdom,but i find it more enjoyable to take it days at a time..and then go back to reread.
I found another place to rest these weary bones.What a blessing.
That is so great & already making progress by focusing on you ~ wonderful!!
You picked up some great books too - my poor ODAT book is so old, I used to bury my head in the index & use it that way. Use what ever you find that helps you. After all the pain, every ray of light is a major vehicle for hope & progress.
You'll also find that each meeting is different, so glad you got to one & found others.
I'm always able to get hope from hearing new stories & growth, thank you.

Good for you! Keep going to those meetings. All those books are great. if you look in the back there are indexes that you can use to look up topics. You are not alone.
