HELP!

I need to talk with someone and decided to log in to this message board for some comfort......... maybe someone out there might know or has also been diagnosed with liver damage and is going through the final stages.

I live with an alcoholic (I am not) that has just been diagnosed with no liver - from drinking and recently we (he) had an appointment to apply for a transplant at Rush Pres in Chicago. After 4 hrs. of interviews, they told us the bottom line was he has to wait 6 months to even be considered. He is VERY, VERY ill right now.

If someone will write back, I will continue.....

Thanks

vangellic,

Welcome to MIP, you are not alone.

We use the 12 steps of AA, with a little variation, to recovery from the family disease of alcoholism. The love and support you can find here is so usefull.

I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. You do not have to be alone. We are here for ya.

Keep coming back.

vangellic,

Welcome to MIP! You will find alot of support here. You will find people that have been in your situation and at least feel what you feel. One of my dearest friends AH had an enlarged liver. He was near death and sobered up for six weeks. He thought that he could do it on his own without a 12 step program. He has started to drink again/stopped again, etc. It is clear that besides moral support that the alcoholic needs to ask for help and there is nothing that we can do. We need to take care of ourselves. Alanon is there to help. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time.

In support,

Nancy

Been there done that , ,my husbands liver was not quite taht bad but docs said one little poke and it would have burst.   One of the biggest solutions of course is to quit drinking  right now. but u can't do that for him .     Pray they find a transplant  and get support for yourself i sure hope u can attend al anon meetings f2f

This now is a God deal , good luck will be thinking of you .   Louise

vangelic,

Have been where you are.  My A almost died two years ago from bleeding in his stomach and esophagus caused by enlarged veins which became so due to severe liver damage which reroutes the blood flow and builds up extreme pressure which causes these varices to burst.  He would have died then if not for the liver shunt they put in.  He has tried to sober up on and off since but obviously he has not truly surrendered and accepted his plight.  Saw the doctor for check up few weeks ago and doctor was very blunt he may have only two years before he goes into liver failure if he doesn't quit drinking.  He is still drinking and there is nothing I can do about it.  I even researched liver transplants back when he was so sick and it is true that they will not even consider doing a transplant unless the person has been sober at least 6 months and working a recovery program.  You can't blame them the surgery is very costly and they can't be putting a liver into someone who is just gonna destroy it when there are so many other needy people.

You can get through this.  You just have to take care of you.  The alanon program and the support here on the message boards, in chat and in the online meetings will help you to make the changes you need to in order to find happiness for yourself no matter what the A chooses to do.

Lisa
