Hi

I am an adult child of a alcoholic. I grew up in a alcoholic home for most of life and my dad stopped drinking after coming to AA for the past 10 years.

However, as I have grown and progressed in my life, I find my past experiences and background having a profound effect on my behaviour. Anger for eg. Huge problem.

I am now married with two lovely children. But I am increasingly unhappy with my self, my old fears, insecurties are surfacing. I see some old patterns of my behaviour while my dad was active and it frightens me to have the same kind of life all over again. After much soul searching, I have come to the conclusion that Al-Anon is the place for me.

I have not been able to get to any f2f yet. I hope to do that too. I have been reading this board and I think this is a wonderful group of people who can help me put the focus back on me. I would like to be part of this forum as I undertake my personal journey.

Sounds like you are in the right place, all right - welcome.

While looking for a meeting, try to get hold of some of our Literature, I'm sure you will find it helpful. "From Survivial to Recovery" is the book mostly focused on adult children of A's, but really anything will help some. You're right, unless we make some changes, we just keep repeating the same patterns. However, there really IS hope - change is possible.

Hope to hear more from you.

Here are some things that have helped me since in the program.

  • Go face to face meeting & online meeting.

  • post on the board here on the site. I have gotten a lot of good feed back.

·        In this program u learn that u have choices. In Alanon we don’t give advice but only suggestions.

·        Set support system.  people do not judge. You need someone who can go for coffee on a bad day, or pick up a phone and call when in trouble. The support is what is important when you first this program.

  • Have a sponsor. Someone work one on one with you.

You don’t have to do this the minute u come to the program but I suggest that u do it when u can. It help.

Meeting schedule: meetings are in here and run approximately 90 minutes from: Monday-Friday, 9 am and 9 pm EST, Saturday: 10 am and 9 pm EST, Sunday: 10 am and 7 pm EST. Topics are selected by participants at meeting time. UK +5 hours, central -1 hour, mountain -2 hours, pacific -3 hours. Open chat all other times.

Hello:

I am adult child of an alcoholic parent which realized the same thing as you.

I have realized my past experiences and background have had a huge effect on my behaviour. I have two beautiful daughters and I too am unhappy with my self and the way I act because of my past experiences. MY A parent still has not admitted there is a problem. My wonderful wife introduced me to Al-anon and I hope to grow and heal here as well. Like you I haven't been to a face to face meeting yet but I am hoping to change that next week. I have been here for a short time and already I have learned quite a bit about myself. Good luck!!

Mike.
