The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
This writer takes a look at "God as we understood Him." We have all come to alanon set in some of our ways. Those who have "God" as their HP, might feel superior to those who are still looking for their HP, or who may have a different HP than "God." HP may be different for many and we need the acceptance once again, to accept the differences. Through attending program the writer says: I have come to know the love and peace of relying on a Power greater than myself. It is in trying to understand less that I experience more.

I think I have always felt kind of lucky that I came to alanon with a Higher Power in place. I do not feel better than others because I've been having a relationship with God for the last 30 or so years. But it has enhanced my practicing program because having a Higher Power is important. HP can be whatever or whoever can fulfill that role for us. I think the writer is saying we cannot understand each and every person's choice of a God of their understanding, but we can embrace this program and all members because we share a common goal.
Thank you for your service and sharing this great page, Lyne.
For me, Step 2 and a higher power was definitely and completely a DIY project, a powerful and impactful journey of spiritual awakening and growth.
I appreciate that Alanon never made me feel like a second hand citizen for not coming in with a standardly accepted, 'legitimate' god/hp. This was absolutely critical, essential for me to learn the lessons of the program, and grow as a person.
I was desperate enough to try anything, including conceiving and adopting a higher power as my guiding, spiritual force. I would not, however, been able to align myself and integrate any existing god concept that I have every encountered.
I have never come across any other spiritual program that offered such autonomy and freedom to me (and all others) at an individual level, yet maintained the feeling of strong unity, fellowship and brotherhood.
Grateful for the wisdom and power of Alanon
