Need ESH on Step 4 Personal Inventory

(((Hello Group)))

I recently sat down and began a moral and fearless personal Inventory to help me with honesty and to put my character flaws on paper to reflect on them.  I just started listing things down that i have done to others or things that I myself have lied about, protected out of fear, put up with.  I guess anything shameful that I'd done or personality traits that I would like to change.  Am I doing this right?  Is this the process of a Personal Inventory?  I don't have a sponser to work on this with and just wanted some input from people who have done this already.  After I make the inventory I understand Step 5 asking HP to humbly remove my character defects, but do I look at one defect at a time.  I started getting a little depressed as there seemed to be so many things in my life that I've lied about or done that I was not happy or proud about.

The other interesting point that I noticed is that my A and I appeared to have alot of the same character defects especially when it comes to being honest with ourselves or lying to other people to get what we want.  Has this happened to anyone else? I see now how I became addicted to chaos and the people who created the chaos.  Thanks for any suggestions or insight you can give me.  Have a blessed day.

Hi Twins Mom,

A lot of the personality traits are similar between A's and co- dependants, enablers etc.

I found that out in counseling years ago.

Step four can be depressing, but it makes it easier to remember we are all human, we all have flaws and defects. By looking at them honestly we can change the things we want to change. We can work at becoming a person we like better and truly love.

Be kind to yourself.

I am looking to where you are. It's hard, but it's so worth it. Try to get a sponsor soon. There's a slogan, "I can't, We can"

Just an FYI, there is a workbook I picked up called "Blueprint for Progress" which is the 4th step laid out.

Just a reminder don't forget to take an inventory of your good characteristics too!!!

Step 5 must be done with another person, a minister, or counselor may fill in, but a program person is best.  I did mine with a lady from AA, as my lone wolf sponsor suggsted, it was best f2f. She was wonderful, and gave me a lot of interesting insite.  We shared both sides of the disease.
