Todays reading is a focus on a few of our slogans, with particular emphasis on the concept of minding our own business! The writer states that live and let live is a reminder that we have lives separate from others and we are all meant to govern our own. The writer describes having offered advice to his/her children whether it was asked for or not. What the writer began to notice was that the instinct to jump in with comments and thoughts was alienating the people in his/her life. As the writer worked on staying out of the business of other people, he/she began to notice the adult children would share more and more, with a deeper level of intimacy and trust.
The Thought for the Day is something I have said word for word to my students: Its not important for me to comment on everything I hear.
Todays reading is another reminder to me about how freeing detachment can be for everyone involved. When I first came to Al-anon I thought detachment had such a negative connotation. The culture in which I grew up was very much about everyone minding everyone elses business! I have come to learn that not only is it respectful of others to stay out of their business, but its healthier for me as well. I have plenty to work on in my own life without adding in the situations and decisions of others!
The quotation from Courage to Change (p.234): Al-Anon helped me to let live by teaching me about detachment and helping me to see that many of my problems stemmed from minding everyones business but my own.
