Questions

I joined the Family Teens sight about a month or so ago. I just joined this one, and I'm trying to figure out how this all works. Are most of the people here dealing with alcoholics that are they're spouses, or children? I was just wondering because it's my dad who is the alcoholic and I've been trying to find people to talk to that understand. Also, are your alcoholics also involved with drugs? I would appreciate any input possible.

Thanks,

Miranda

Hi Miranda,

Welcome to alanon, glad you found us.

My "A" is my husband. He is an addict/alcoholic. Whatever it takes to not feel anything.

Some people have alcoholic husbands, wifes, sisters, brothers, parents, grandparents, children, friends, etc.

The thing is we all love alcoholics and addicts. Pain is pain. And you can find a home here if you want to. You won't be sorry, there is great recovery here.

Keep coming back.

Much Love,

This board helps those who love someone who is addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.  It is a wonderful place where you can find support, understanding and friendship.  I am the mother of two teenagers who have a father who is an alcoholic.  I see the pain that is caused by this disease not only to me but to my children.  I am so sorry that this disease is horrible for everyone.. You will read posts of people who you would think were writing for you.. Keep posting, you wont be sorry..

Miranda,

Welcome to this site.  I grew up in a household with an alcoholic father.  I have my own family now and my wife is an A.  I am really here for both.  I didn't seek out any help when I was young and I commend you for doing so.  My life would be much different now if I had, but it just wasn't meant to be.

If you post here, you will find understanding and caring, since many of us grew up in homes similar to yours I am sure.  You will be suprised.  The disease runs a pretty calculated course.

Keep posting and search through some of the old topics, you will see many references that will have meaning for you I am sure.

Like I said welcome, if you love an alcoholic/user you are in the right place.

Take care of you!

Hi Miranda and welcome.

I have several A's in my life - my grandfathers (both now deceased), my father (still active), my ex husband (also still active) and my son.  I do not believe my grandfathers nor my father were involved in drugs, but I know that my ex is and I fear that my son may be (maybe it's the pot leaf shirt he's so proud of....).

So, I'm the grandchild of, the child of, the ex spouse of and the mother of an alcoholic.  I am also a recovering alcoholic myself.

The programs of AA and Alanon have been immeasurably helpful to me in my relationship first with a power greater than myself, my relationship with myself and my relationships with others, including the other alcoholics in my life.

I came into a 12 step program with no hope.  My life was horrible, I was miserable, I was depressed.  I did not actually have anything that resembled a life, just a shell of something.  Today, thanks to the 12 steps and the fellowship found here I have hope - lots of it - and I have a life, a good life that I am pretty content with most of the time.  I have healthy relationships today (most of the time).  I'm not always happy, but I'm not depressed anymore.  Sometimes I'm sad.  Sometimes I feel angry.  But it's a good life, one that I wouldn't trade for the world.

Keep coming back.  It's good stuff here!

Karen

Here are some things that have helped me since in the program.

  • Go face to face meeting & online meeting.

  • post on the board here on the site. I have gotten a lot of good feed back.

·        Set support system.  people do not judge. You need someone who can go for coffee on a bad day, or pick up a phone and call when in trouble. The support is what is important when you first this program.

  • Have a sponsor. Someone work one on one with you.

You don’t have to do this the minute u come to the program but I suggest that u do it when u can. It help.

Topics are selected by participants at meeting time. UK +5 hours, central -1 hour, mountain -2 hours, pacific -3 hours. Open chat all other times.
