Saying bye bye to an old timer...

Kia ora koutou... greetings y'all... smile ...

I like the way funerals are these days. There is a lot more emotion... and kids and grandkids are encouraged to get up and say what they like.

For us local people a funeral takes three or four days. Sometimes one... and our mountain folks- just one day- but 300 or 400 people show up.

I belong in both camps- perfectly comfortable in both... ...our oldtimer was born about 600km upcountry. Her A. was one of the mountain folk.

We bid Gw. farewell in late march- and this was mentioned in the service. Through zoom- and we got to pay our tributes to her personally. She passed three days later. As the meeting was drawing to a close Gw. interupted.

She responded to our shares and wish us a fond farewell...

My last talk with her I was on the way to a meeting. I wish now I had allowed 2 hours, and not 40 mins.

Gw. never faltered on the higher power stuff. She encouraged us to talk about our faith. If some one elses' journey was a bit different from hers- she saw this as a source of strength!

When hubby was alive their home was open home- in the way of many oldtimers. She and R. had open hearts. Had suffered so much.

Both were gifted with empathy.

Moe mai roa ehine, ehoa moku...

Sleep the long and restful sleep, my dearest friend... ...rest always...

((((David))))

This glimpse into your culture is fascinating for me, even though you are speaking of a funeral. I love how you speak of the 'old timers." With such reverence. With obvious love.
I do not live in a community where connections are so close... many times I wish I did, and when I read your posts about your life and part of your country, is one of those times. Wonderful tribute to your friend.

smile P. Our old town is much bigger now- with a whole heaps of newcomers.

[We would not dare to call them strangers!]

Two rivers ran through our valley and met at the entrance to the gorge. Now they are a lake! There is a huge dam at the bottom end of the gorge.

I say this often- but the construction crews introduced Alanon and AA to this neck of the woods. aww

What a wonderful send-off.

You really get to know people in a community like that.

Beautifully told, as always.

Hugs,
Temple
