ODAT, August 2 - Live and Let Live

Today's page in One Day At a Time in Al-Anon shows how much wisdom is condensed in the slogan Live and Let Live. The slogan tells us first to Live -- fully, richly, taking joy in what we do.  The next part -- Let Live -- is more difficult because it calls on us to accept the right of all other human beings to live as they want to, without our criticism, contempt, or resentment.

The quote for today is "When my thoughts are centered on learning to live, I will be less tempted to involve my mind with the thoughts of how others will live."

------------------

I used to think this slogan -- which I heard way before Al-Anon -- was just a way of dismissing one's opinions or reactions to other people.  Gotta just let them live the way they want, no matter how it affects me.

In Al-Anon I learned to listen to that first word -- Live.   This is what enables me to have serenity regardless of what others are doing.  If I am living my authentic life, I may not be impervious to what others are doing, but I have much less  time and space to obsess over it. It does not put me above or below other people, but it keeps things in balance.

Thank you Freetime for today's reading and message.

If I am living my authentic life, I may not be impervious to what others are doing, but I have much less  time and space to obsess over it.

I love and totally agree with the above statement you shared with the reading.  I needed that reminder.....that I may not be impervious, but I won't be obsessed with others if I am living my authentic life.  A word that resonates with me....authentic.  The lowest common denominator of what/who we should be.

Happy Friday to all.  My grandson gets baptized this weekend, along with his first birthday.  Another milestone to celebrate!

Thank you Freetime for this great reminder!

I especially like your understanding of this slogan. There was a time that I thought Al-Anon (and by extension AA) would solve all my problems...well, in time I began to understand that it couldn't. But... it could help me to live more authentically (there's that word again! LOL!). It helped me to not obsess. Important stuff.

El - enjoy the weekend and grandson... sounds like you have some fun things happening!!

Thank you Freetime for your service and the daily. Thank you family above me for your shares and ESH. I too focused on the 'back side' of this slogan at first skimming right over the Live part.....as sanity was returning, and I found myself present and even serene at times, I returned to consider what 'live' means for/to me. I love how it's expressed here - fully, richly, taking joy in what we do. For me, I am not able to live my life today unless I am authentic - as best I know how to be...

Those first suggestions of keeping the focus on me and one day at a time helped me find my true self and better embrace this slogan. I am not perfect - I can still get offended, upset, disappointed as a first reaction to actions or words of another yet using our tools helps me pause and pray before I proceed to continue living and letting other's live as the want/need.

Happy Friday to one and all! (((Hugs)))

  Thanks Freetime, and y'all... smile

To live and let live I had to have boundaries... and these were pretty scrunched up. My first years in Alanon were okay- but then, new policies came in. I found these to be harsh and restrictive. So I suppose this was a boundary building process for me.

I still try to stick to the code, and the rules, as i found them. I paraphrased Live and Let Live this way: I will mind my business, and you can mind yours. And If we find that we have business together, that is fine and dandy... biggrin ...

...that was about connection, communication, and even about emotional intimacy. [Rapport, and empathy.]

-thanks... aww ...
