Help and Hope

For Families and Friends of Alcoholics...

in the monthly Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism 2019 in now in my home and it is free and could be found I guess in most meeting literature stacks.

Though it is new-comer intended I love reading it for cause.  God do I remember when I first got into recovery at the suggestion of my alcoholic/addict wife thru her sponsor.  Yes I did it for others because it was a new strange suggestion that I thought might be macho on my part to do just to show them I could handle suggestion without fear.  Honestly still I did fear this new direction even while blaming "them...her" for my anger and confusion.

I hated "them, the AFG program and membership and what they spoke about and how they spoke it".  I hated the AAers who confronted me and tried to win me into their program, the Big Book thumpers and drunk tale tellers.  Argggh!!

I left them and her and booze as another force around me took over which was a power greater than myself who imposed it's will upon the insanity of my life and I just quit...I quit fighting it all; everything and stayed in Al-Anon because of it's gentleness and open honestly of the fellowship and I came to understand.  Once I did that my understanding grew and grew and continues to grow on a daily basis.  The power greater than myself took over and is with me now even as I type this.

What remains with me now along with what I get from our literature is how it came to change me completely in ways I could never have imagined.

This is powerful stuff and it works when I work it and miracles are real and I love getting them and passing them on to others.

I am where I supposed to be passing on the availability of a tool that might also help someone else.  There is Help and Hope in Al-Anon and it is free.  Good luck to those who get one and read it and pass it on.   (((((hugs))))) awwbiggrinsmile

Jerry - is this the copy you've got?

al-anon.org/for-members/members-resources/literature/magazines/afa-magazine/

I can track it down locally if not - just curious....I'd much rather read online (works better with my aging eyes)!

That is the one and didn't check your lead to see if all pages were included...must be or it wouldn't be that helpful huh?  ((((hugs)))) wink

Gonna take copies to a mental health facility near us as the majority of the problems (I have been told by staff) are related to family addiction.

Love this! It is one of my favorite things. A new edition is published each year for public outreach. My Al-Anon district orders a bunch of them. I have given copies to mental health professionals, and they are very happy to have them on hand for their clients.

Great reminder post, and yes - we all need to remember our routes and beginnings, no matter where we are in our respective programs of recovery.

I'm forever amazed at how many newcomers - both in AA and Al-Anon - almost start with that whole "I want help, but don't feed me that line of bs that I've heard before", lol

I still chuckle at the tongue-in-cheek comment re: Al-Anon - "try us for six meetings.... if it is not for you, we will gladly refund your misery" :)

I love the simplicity of our program, and the fact that we are given choices - we never are "should-ed" into anything.

Tom

CG that saying resonated with me when I first heard it because the refund wasn't something that I valued at all.  I did get that refund numerous times until I learned to be a follower of the ESH in the program.   ((((hugs)))) wink

I especially liked the article "Al-Anon Is All About Change."

Thank you for posting.
