The reading for Monday, 2/18, says that the daily practice of the alanon program helps the author be more tolerant of others.  They began recognizing that they had similar shortcomings so easily to see in others.

The author said:  If my perceptions of myself have been so inaccurate, how reliable can my perceptions of others be?

The author also said:  Regular, dedicated practice of the principles of the program keeps me feeling good about myself....permits me to be open-minded and considerate of everyone in my life.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have to agree with everything this author said and I can so relate.  For many years I only saw the flaws my A had, and it took many more years for me to be able to admit my own.  Because daily practice of alanon enables me to keep the focus on myself, I am better at tolerating others.  I have talks with myself, HP, and program friends, that keep me moving forward instead of getting stuck.  That was miserable, and I never want to be in that place of self-pity and blaming again, Lyne

I had a part in that dysfunctional marriage as well...yea, he was abusive, I'm not gonna minimize EITHER of our dysfunctions, but I don't hate him anymore...I have my own mental/emotional weeds in MY yard to pull up..I've not the right to work my EX's inventories...

Great reminder Lyne I never thought of examining my motives or myself prior to program. Now when i am tempted o judge another I look within and ask myself what is within me that is objecting to the person Great exercise.
Thanks for your service

Good morning MIP! Thank you Lyne for your service and the daily. I was so darn black/white in my thinking prior to recovery that I was always looking for who was wrong so I could be right! It truly never dawned on me that we could both be wrong or we could both be right or a mix of 'it'.

It is in working the steps of this program that I had the aha moment mentioned by the author - "If my perceptions of myself have been so inaccurate, how reliable can my perceptions of others be?" The program showed me how deeply flawed many of my self perceptions were and gave me the freedom to be authentic. This opened the door for unconditional acceptance and love of others as well as empathy, compassion and understanding.

I am grateful to recovery as it gives me constructive tools to live with/by and I too have abandoned the blame/shame game. One day at a time, I live my life by doing the next right thing and fear less about the past and the future.

Happy Monday all - make it a great day!

Thank you all for being here this President's Day! I don't have the day off, so I was happy to have my regular routine in place.

I can relate with all your shares. Thank you Lyne for the timely reminder for myself!

Peace!
