A New Start

It's been awhile since I've posted here, although I do visit and read your posts from time to time. For those of you who are new to the board, here is where I was almost six years ago to this day: https://alanon.activeboard.com/t52215254/this-horrible-disease-took-away-my-ah-last-night/

Today, I'm happy to share that I met a great guy through an online dating site three years ago and we got engaged a few weeks ago. If you would have told me six years ago that my life would be where it is now, I would have asked you, "What have YOU been drinking?!" I won't say that the first couple of years after my AH passed were easy. I had to get away from my pity party by working on myself: going to Al-Anon meetings, talking with my sponsor, reading my program literature, and posting on this board when I just couldn't figure out what to do. So, it was a process, but I did the work and, with the help of my HP, I began the process of healing and acceptance. One of my three adult daughters is an alcoholic and still has not been able to work out the grief she carries regarding her dad's death. She was the one who found him unconscious on the living room floor that day that he died. She needs help getting over her guilt and bitterness, but that is her journey to make, and not mine.

So, at age 60, I'm now planning a summer wedding to a wonderful partner who supports me, understands my "tapestry," and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. I like to say that neither of us are perfect, but we are perfect together. I never thought I'd be writing this, but here I am, and it's a pretty special place to be. I am so grateful for this program. Without it, I don't now how I would have made it this far.

Thanks for letting me share.

PS: SerenityRUS and I recently got a chance to catch up while I was in her neck of the woods. We met on this board several years ago and have continued to keep in touch and offer ESH for each other from time to time. We've shared a lot of common experiences through our Al-Anon journeys over the years. Here's a photo of the two of us when we gathered last weekend. :)
