Powerless - almost walked off my job today!

I am sooooo mad my blood is boiling! Just came from Curves after work - good thing. There is a punching platform and I pretended it was my boss's face!

When I started my fulltime job (will have completed 8yrs fulltime end of June) there was my boss and 1 parttimer. Boss & I only fulltimers.

A new boss started 2yrs ago this past Dec. So far she has made major changes but not in my/circulation office so Ive gotten over them!

Last night she added 2 sets of cabinets above my work area. So I was ok with this - actually got to put away some of the materials I need to work my job.

But at lunch time she emptied off 1 counter (I work on the other one) to make room for the parttimers. Ok we now have an additional 5 more PTers than originally. Then she empties off a shelf on the bookcase so again I loose space. Then she takes the work calendar with everyone's schedule and puts it up behind the circulation desk (instead of office) so even the public can now see when ppl are working! What the heck is with that! She even went so far as to move written notes I had on papers taped on the walls saying how to process materials, etc. Notes I "need" for my job. Now she's talking about getting rid of my computer table! I would be working only one the 1 counter with my back to the public! I work in childrens circulation at our town library so need to know when ppl are checking out material so I can help them - besides being in the office processing new material, etc. getting rid of this computer table is not a good thing (in my eyes anyways). I already cleared off 1 counter (length of room) to make room for parttimers. What the heck does she want? Blood?

Would she like me to go into her office and start moving things? taking things off the walls, etc? God help me!

Hi Barbara!  This sort of thing makes me mad, too--when people make decisions about YOUR life and don't even bother to discuss it with you!  That's not a very good boss, imo!

Do you feel able to talk with her about this, and let her know that some discussion would have been helpful?

Sometimes people just don't know the effect their behavior has on others, and it's up to us, with some skillful boundary-setting, to let them know!  This is so hard to do, for me, but the times I have done it, have for the most part been very rewarding!

I know it's even scarier when you feel your job might be on the line, but even at work, people don't have the right to ignore our feelings or treat us as if we don't exist!

Good luck with the decompressing--and then...the courage it takes to say something if you feel OK with that!

Just spoke w/husband. His response "you gotta tell her its how you do your job and if she doesnt like it, you should quit! Youve worked there long enough, someone coming in off the street wouldnt do your job for what you get paid. Go to the town manager and tell him that she's getting paid for 35hrs but only working 30"

Hi barbara

((((Barbara))))

I am sorry that your boss was so callous as to move things without discussing them with you.

Perhaps take a few minutes privately to let her know how this impacted you.

perhaps the p-timers can relieve your work burdens
