HOLDING me in the now

TUESDAY , APRIL 04, 2006

You are reading from the book Today's Gift </OA_HTML/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?item=2121>.

One day at a time--this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone.
--Ida Scott Taylor

It's not always easy to understand that the day stretching before us is all that counts. Daydreaming about the party last week, or getting upset all over again about a fight we had yesterday with a friend doesn't help us right now. When our minds are on the past, we miss out on the conversation or the activity that is going on around us.
Every moment of the day is special, and guaranteed to help us grow and understand life. All of us have been taught to pay attention in school, or to pay attention when others talk to us. But we should also pay attention to the birds, the sky, even the grass. And we can learn a lot by paying attention to the conversations going on around us, and to the small voice inside us that helps us know right from wrong. What's going on today is enough to pay attention to.Am I ready to pay attention to what is around me today?

XXXXXXXXXX oh yeah, this is especially true for me...reminating over the past weeks/months bad events.....being upset/ worried about them, instead of staying in the right now...i am better with this but need more work.....i want to stay in the NOW, cuz i can maybe so stuff NOW that will protect me from so many UNwanted events in the future.....it makes sense.........right now i am feeling my feelings, doing my self talk, taking my vitamins....doing what i can do for me NOW........i am doing self talk and discipline to STAY IN THE NOW---- SLOW down--- PAY attention.......LISTEN to my inner HP's voice............yes, i have to HOLD me in the now and it is so hard, with my mind racing, and ptsd pumping either adrenalin or noradrenalin --- which means i am in "over drive" "flight or fight" or i am numbed out--shut down, not feeling much...either way, keeping in the now can help me manage my ptsd symptoms and talk myself down........

Rosie,

Yeah it is like driving with your eyes glued to the rear view mirror!  If you keep looking back you will crash.  I am working hard on this too.  So many years...so many wasted years.  Now I have my life back and I want to live it!  Stay focused on now! You are so right!

Yours in recovery,

Julia
