New and lost ....

Didn't know where else to turn. Been in a relationship with an alcoholic for over 3 years and I'm at my wits end. The roller coaster is suffocating and my heart aches. Sinking into a deep depression.

Hi jearnee,

Glad you found us. Sorry for the sadness you're experiencing. We have online Alanon meetings here twice a day. Maybe you'll join us for a meeting to learn more about the program. In person Alanon is always recommended if you can find a meeting in your area. It can help for relieving some of the stress and you may feel less alone. Take heart, there's hope. Please keep coming back for recovery. (((hugs)) TT

Welcome jearnee - glad you found us and glad that you reached out and shared. Alcoholism is a progressive disease that's never cured. It can be treated through abstinence and support yet it's a life-long battle. AA is for those who want a different way. Al-Anon is for friends and family of the drinker, and you are welcome to attend meetings and recover no matter what the Alcoholic is/is not doing.

The best process for getting a sponsor is to attend local meetings. If there are none in your area, and your best way for recovery is the internet, I too recommend you attend online meetings here (or wherever you can) and reach out there.

Loving one with this disease is maddening. Alcoholism is considered a family disease as almost all who love/live with one are affected. We often end up with distorted thinking and some level of insanity trying to fight a disease that's larger than life. I found my peace again in Al-Anon and hope you'll give it a shot.

Please keep coming back - there is hope and help in recovery!

Aloha Jearnee and welcome to the family.  You are here just as we are and we  found this place much like you have just done and then found the peace of mind and serenity we could not find and hold onto while in that snaky relationship with the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction.  You already know there a twice daily meetings here for those who are not yet able to attend a group outside.  Join in with them.

We share ESH (experience, strength and  hope) with each other that we can help each other learn and grow and find sanity.  One thing I learned in early recovery was the definition of depression and that helped me to find a way out of it.   "Anger turned inward" was what I was given and it was until I learned the opposite of anger in the rooms of Al-Anon...the opposite for me is acceptance of the disease and the fact that I am powerless over it and that my life had become unmanageable.  That is our/my first step of the 12 steps of our recovery.

Good to have you here.   Keep coming back.   (((((hugs))))) smile

Hello Jearnee, I was in your situation. I'm still early days in alanon but I am slowly gaining back pieces of my sanity here. We are family, sharing the same issues and feeling the same things. Keep sharing here. x
